In the Baltic Sea resort of Karlshagen on the island of Usedom, you can enjoy not only the beach and the sea but also discover great attractions. The Fishing and Yacht Harbor is one of the top highlights. It is located not far from the center and is equipped with dining options, accommodations, apartments, bicycle rentals, and shopping facilities. From here, you can also take passenger ships to the Ruden and Greifswalder Oie islands. In the summer, regular marina festivals are held. Another highlight is, of course, the beach of Karlshagen. With almost 2,000 hours of sunshine a year, it is the ideal place to recharge. Look forward to a more than 1km long sandy beach. Naturists can also relax on certain beaches. The beach promenade in Karlshagen is particularly beautiful and tranquil. It runs parallel to the dune and campsite street and is full of shops, play areas for children, or places to rest. In the town center, a visit to the Karlshagen Church is worthwhile. It is one of the youngest church buildings on the island Usedom.
If you visit Usedom in the summer, you can experience the world's largest beach volleyball tournament. The tournament has indeed made it into the Guinness Book of Records. Here, the center court turns into a witch's cauldron. The program also includes activities for children, water animation at the sports beach in Karlshagen with banana boat, SUP, and wakeboard, as well as culinary highlights. Another recommendation for your vacation in the Baltic Sea resort is the Peene Bridge Wolgast. The bridge over the Peene is one of the two road connections from the mainland to the island of Usedom. The 250-meter-long bridge is today a road and also a railway drawbridge. The place Koserow between Karlshagen and Ahlbeck also attracts vacationers. Here, sailors, surfers, bathers, hikers, or cyclists can fully enjoy their time. You can relax on the Baltic Sea beach or climb the highest elevation of Usedom, the Streckelsberg, nearby.
The area around Karlshagen is ideal for active holidays. Rental bicycles are often available. Besides swimming, you can also engage in water sports or take beach walks. Between Karlshagen and Trassenheide, there are also riding stables. The Reiterhof Bannemin offers beach rides among other activities! On the last weekend of July, the traditional Harbor Party with fireworks takes place at the harbor. A popular destination for family outings is the house that stands upside down. In the Baltic Sea resort of Trassenheide, you can view a living world from a highly unusual perspective. The quirky building is complemented by educational and experiential paths with changing exhibitions in the outdoor area. Nearby, there is also a Kinderland and a butterfly farm. Kinderland is open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM, and admission costs €9 for children from 2 years, €5 for adults and teenagers (as of October 2023). Also great for families: the Wildlife Usedom in Trassenheide. Here, the whole family can admire lions, tigers, zebras, snakes, as well as native forest animals daily from 9:30 AM – 6 PM. A petting zoo in the outdoor area, an indoor adventure playground, and a Tropic Lounge for relaxing round out the offerings. By the way: photography is explicitly encouraged here! Tickets can be purchased on-site, and prices can be found here.
The cuisine of Usedom is mostly hearty and stands for down-to-earth home cooking. Ingredients such as potatoes, beets, cabbage, and of course freshly caught fish can be found here on the menus. Annually in April, the Herring Weeks take place. In September, the Inventors' Days are held, and in October, locals and guests look forward to the Usedom Game Weeks. A universally popular fish sandwich can be bought at the snack stand. Also, try the traditional smoked fish - e.g., eel, halibut, mackerel, trout, or flounder.
For a cultural highlight, visit the Museum Harbor Wolgast. Here, you can admire the railroad ferry "Stralsund" up close. The ship has been under monument protection since 1986. The museum harbor also houses other impressive ships and restored half-timbered houses that once served as storage, among other things. Not far from Karlshagen is the Historical-Technical Museum Peenemünde. Over 5,000 sqm, you can trace the history of rocket research in Peenemünde. You will walk along marked trails at authentic sites. Regular special exhibitions are also held here, as well as theater performances, concerts, or readings.
