North Sea vacation 2026

We were at KompassRose for the first time. A very beautiful, tastefully decorated holiday home, furnished with great attention to detail and spotlessly clean. Very high-quality interior, nothing is missing. The location is perfect for excursions to Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, and the small coastal towns in between like Spieka Neufeld, Dorum, Wremen, etc. Good shopping options nearby (Rewe, Aldi, etc.). At night, it is so quiet that you can hear a pin drop. Wonderful for a restful sleep. We felt very comfortable.
The highlight, however, is the landlord, a very empathetic person who is interested in and committed to his tenants. That is worth its weight in gold! He was always reachable for us.
We have been to the North Sea very often. The KompassRose was so far the most beautiful holiday home.
We will not be there for the last time.

It was our first winter vacation at the North Sea. The highway was not crowded and the holiday home was easy to find. A very well-kept little house with a front garden. Behind the front door is the hallway equipped with a wardrobe and mirror. To the right of the hallway, you go to the children's room with two beds and a foldable mattress. To the left is the well-equipped modern kitchen. All the electrical appliances were functional and spick and span clean. Further behind the kitchen to the left is a small bathroom with a shower and toilet, clean and with toilet paper. The bright living room with a dining area and a view of the garden was a dream. The living room was furnished with a comfortable seating arrangement, coffee table, and television. Behind the "TV wall" was the bedroom with a large, comfortable double bed and a window. From the living room, you could go out to the terrace and sit comfortably under the glass roof in the sun. The house was comfortably warm, with an outside temperature of around 5 degrees Celsius, rain, and wind. In the town center, easily reachable on foot, you can shop at a store and eat at two restaurants. We knew this; it was the off-season. As a reward, we had the beach, the sea, and the wind all to ourselves. It was worth it, and the hostess is highly recommended!

If you thought there are no attractions around a dike and on the beach, let the North Sea prove you wrong. Popular destinations include the numerous lighthouses along the coast and on the islands. Sylt alone has five lighthouses! On the mainland, the "Dicke Berta" in Cuxhaven and the Westerheversand lighthouse near Sankt Peter-Ording are particularly beautiful and open to visitors. Or have you always wanted to know how and where large cruise ships and luxury liners are built? Then a trip to the Meyer Shipyard in Papenburg is a must. It's more of a natural spectacle than an attraction: the steep coast is bathed in a blood-red light at sunset, a truly unique sight. The Wadden Sea - UNESCO World Natural Heritage since 2009

If you don't go on a mudflat hike during your vacation at the North Sea, you're missing one of the country's greatest attractions. The Wadden Sea National Park is divided into the Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Lower Saxony Wadden Sea. All three parts are part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea. It's best to book a guided tour, as no one can provide you with more information about the nature reserve than a knowledgeable local staff member. Along the North Sea and on the islands, there are information centers with informative exhibitions that are also very interesting for children. The National Park House Wurster North Sea Coast in Dorum-Neufeld features large aquariums where you can watch some inhabitants of the mudflats live in action. The offer also includes special mudflat hikes for families, ornithological tours, bike tours, and sea sparkle. The Multimar Wattforum in the cozy harbor town of Tönning is another information center, the largest in Schleswig-Holstein. From afar, you can see the slogan "Whales, Wadden Sea, and World Natural Heritage" on the facade. In addition to classic hikes through the mudflats, there are also tours in Low German, a tour of the aquariums in the dark, readings, and fish feedings. The fact that the water isn't really there at low tide often doesn't bother little water rats much. There's so much to discover in the mudflats that boredom is unlikely to arise. Plus, the kids will love stomping in the muddy silt. Make sure they take off their rubber boots before returning to the accommodation after such a hike. Families are especially found on the Eiderstedt Peninsula, on Borkum and Amrum, but also in Friedrichskoog and St. Peter-Ording in Schleswig-Holstein, as well as in Cuxhaven-Döse. Here, there are great beaches and numerous affordable vacation apartments and houses in close proximity to the beach and in quiet locations. If it happens to rain for three days, a visit to the adventure pool on Borkum will bring back the good mood. This is also true for parents, as it has a generous spa area. A major highlight for young vacationers is also a trip to the seal station Friedrichskoog, where they can watch seals and sea lions up close. In the family-friendly town of Friedrichskoog, over 2,500 square meters are reserved for limitless play fun: The 125-meter-long Whale Willi houses an indoor play park, offering everything from climbing walls to mazes to electric go-kart tracks, making little adventurers' hearts beat faster. To stay on the topic of animals: Is one of your best friends a dog? Then bring them along on the trip. Many accommodations welcome pets. Even the Hallig Hooge has a museum, namely the Homeland and Hallig Museum. Exhibitions and facilities in many other places also provide information about life at the North Sea, its history, and culture, such as the open-air dike museum in Büsum. Art lovers should keep an eye on the Nolde Foundation Seebüll. The famous painter Emil Nolde was born nearby. The museum hosts changing exhibitions each year but is closed over the winter. Literature enthusiasts will perk up at the name Theodor Storm: The writer was born in Husum. The house where he lived from 1866 to 1880 is now a museum and can be visited.
