Due to its location, Wolgast is also known as the "gateway" to the island of Usedom, and the town is famous for its wonderfully preserved historic center. Those traveling to Usedom encounter the famous blue-painted Peene Bridge in Wolgast ("Blue Wonder"), where cars and trains cross the Peene to reach the Baltic Sea island. It is one of the city's most prominent landmarks. Another landmark of Wolgast is the St. Petri Church, the former court church of the Dukes of Pomerania-Wolgast. The tower of the 14th-century brick church has a viewing platform offering a beautiful view of the city. Inside, a medieval cycle of paintings is worth seeing. The center of the old town, with its many pretty historic houses and the 18th-century town hall, is located around the town hall square. Just a few steps from the historic town hall is the "Kaffeemühle" Museum, housed in a historic grain store and focusing on the city's history. On the castle island, there is a small museum harbor surrounded by beautiful old warehouses. The main attraction in the harbor until 2017 was the historic steam ferry "Stralsund," now located in the city harbor on the other side of the bridge. The "Stralsund" is the only preserved steam ferry for railways in the world. A visit to the Peene Shipyard, just a few kilometers north of the center of Wolgast and your affordable vacation home or apartment, is also worthwhile.
Not just for kids: A house in sky blue and white is one of the most famous landmarks in the Baltic Sea resort of Trassenheide. It stands upside down and invites its visitors, both young and old, to view a living world from a special and unusual perspective. What initially seems unimaginable can be experienced live inside. You will experience how "upside down goes." Additionally curious is that the house stands on a slightly inclined plane, making visitors feel additionally deceived by their senses. Lovers of the beautiful spa architecture in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern should definitely visit the nearby Zinnowitz, just 10 kilometers away. Zinnowitz has a variety of buildings in the style of spa architecture to view along the beach promenade. The Baltic Sea resort of Zinnowitz is a classic vacation spot on Usedom. The town is known for its promenade, where you can stroll quietly and relaxed with your dog, enjoying the beautiful view of the Baltic Sea and the lovingly maintained houses.
Wolgast and its surroundings have a lot to offer for a beautiful and varied vacation in an apartment with the whole family, such as the Wolgast Zoo located in the greenery with around 400 animals from 52 species, which is definitely worth a visit. Also family-friendly and interesting are the Old Manor and the Farmer's Garden in Mölschow. They offer young and old alike creative as well as sporty-active activities and plenty of relaxation. Just 10 kilometers away on Usedom is another exciting excursion destination: the largest butterfly farm in Europe, where you can observe up to 2,000 butterflies from tropical regions in the free-flight hall. A "phenomenal experience" is offered by the "Phänomenta" in Peenemünde. It invites its visitors to a journey of discovery into the world of physical phenomena and human senses. For a vacation with a dog, the area around Wolgast is almost perfect: a beautiful dog beach is located between Trassenheide and Zinnowitz (only 10 km from the center of Wolgast).
The cuisine in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is inherently hearty. The Baltic Sea and numerous inland waters provide a rich variety of fish. Smoked fish is particularly popular, but fish is also enjoyed in every other form in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Specialties include fried garfish and Rügen eel soup. Meat dishes such as Labskaus and pounded ham are typical for the region. Be sure to try smoked eel or mackerel at one of the numerous smokehouses and enjoy them with your loved ones privately in your vacation home or apartment. Wolgast also has a number of recommendable restaurants. At the "Alter Speicher" with its own smokehouse, you can enjoy a maritime atmosphere just as much as next door at Fischer Klaus.
