Travel guide Putbus
Many Sunny Hours and Mild Winters
Balanced temperatures, low precipitation, and high humidity characterize the climate on Rügen. In July, the average temperature is 16°C. With over 2,000 hours of sunshine per year, the number of sunny days on the island is quite high. Typical for Rügen are very mild, but also very harsh weather periods. May and September are consistent good-weather months. Although the temperature of the Baltic Sea water is cool even in summer, the water in the bays warms up pleasantly. From mid-June to the end of September, a water temperature of 17°C provides good swimming opportunities. As you can see, a peaceful vacation apartment or a holiday home with excellent amenities in Putbus is a great travel destination all year round.
Putbus - The Enchanting Residence City
Although Putbus is the youngest town on Rügen, the district of Lauterbach is the oldest seaside resort on the island. With its founding, spa architecture made its way to Rügen. The town is located between the Zudar and Mönchgut peninsulas, not far from the Rügischer Bodden. In front of Lauterbach lies the island of Vilm. Due to the white-painted houses, the place is nicknamed "White City on Rügen." Because of the many rose bushes in front of historic buildings, Putbus is also called "Rose City."
Popular attractions include the Circus Putbus, where all streets converge, the castle park with the game reserve for fallow and red deer, and the Orangery. The castle was dismantled in 1964, so today only the outline remains. However, the castle's nearby lakeside terrace has been preserved. The founding of the seaside resort Lauterbach is evidenced by the historic Goor Bathhouse, located directly on the Baltic Sea.
Attractions in the surrounding area include the megalithic tombs at Lonvitz and the churches in Kasnevitz and Vilmitz. An interesting excursion is a ride on the narrow-gauge steam railway Rasender Roland, which starts from Putbus. The journey takes you from Lauterbach through
Binz, past the hunting lodge Granitz, to Göhren.
Culinary Richness in Putbus
Putbus was already praised and recommended as a charming seaside resort in many travel guides in 1898. The former residence city of the founding Prince Wilhelm Malte has lost none of this distinction. Even today, you can admire the majestic buildings in the classical style that the Prince had built to beautify his residence. When he founded the city, he created a unique ensemble of landscape, art, and culture. Even though the castle is gone, the English-style castle park hints at past times. During a walk through the park, you encounter the Marstall, tulip and mammoth trees, and the Orangery, where concerts and art exhibitions regularly take place.
The Circus is another legacy of the Prince. This roundabout square houses a 19-meter-high obelisk in the center. The square is lined with numerous buildings in the classical style. A romantic chestnut avenue leads from the square to the former castle. During the high season, opera and drama performances take place in the magnificent Residence Theatre of 1821, just a few meters from the Circus. The craftsmen's houses on August-Bebel-Straße are also worth seeing. This special gem is not to be missed.
The sailing and harbor festival in Lauterbach, the Putbus Festival, the Vilmswimming, the Cabaret Regatta Rügen, and the Rügen Wood Fair are among the regular events in and around Putbus.
Putbus consists of 30 districts, many of which are directly on the Rügischer Bodden. An architectural curiosity awaits you on Lauterbacher Chaussee: a house turned upside down, where everything except the entrance is rotated 180 degrees. You can visit the upside-down house daily. From your peaceful holiday home or affordable vacation apartment, you can reach the most beautiful attractions in a short time on foot, by bike or car, or by public transport.
Fish from the Baltic Sea
During a vacation in a quiet holiday home or apartment in Putbus, you should definitely try the regional specialties. Whether inventive, modern, or hearty: Rügen has dishes to suit every taste. While Rügen cuisine long had the reputation of being hearty and simple, the cuisine has transformed in recent years. Grandma's recipes are now prepared with modern sophistication. Numerous regional products such as cheese, dairy products, potatoes, asparagus, and meat from lambs, cattle, and pigs from the island are used.
Of course, fish is also a highlight: pike-perch, pike, eel, and cod abound in the Bodden waters and the
Baltic Sea. Fresh from the cutter, you can prepare a delicious meal for your loved ones in your private holiday home or apartment. If you have rented accommodation in the spring, do not miss the herring days. Then come the garfish days. This fish arrives in early May from the Atlantic and the Mediterranean to spawn in the Baltic Sea. Although the flesh of the garfish is very tasty, it is still largely unknown. In autumn, the cabbage weeks begin. Cabbage is as much a part of Rügen as the Granitz hunting lodge and the Königsstuhl.
Stews or roasts with raisins, apples, and plums are somewhat unusual for foreign palates, but locals swear by the sweet and sour flavor. A meal is perfectly concluded with Rode Grütt (red berry pudding), which tastes especially good with vanilla sauce.
Family Fun by the Baltic Sea
A vacation apartment or holiday home in Putbus is excellent for a
family-friendly vacation or a holiday with a dog. Most accommodations are excellently equipped, such as with Wi-Fi, and offer ample space for children and pets.
A popular destination for families is the treetop path in Binz. Here, you get an excellent insight into the ecosystem of the treetops, usually hidden from the eye. However, you should not be afraid of heights to explore the treetop path. The interactive exhibition on Rügen's natural heritage with its information center and interactive stations on nature is also very interesting.
The indoor mini-golf facility in
Bergen auf Rügen is a great destination for the whole family, even in rainy weather. Parents and children can compete against each other to see who handles the small ball best. The Tiet Un Wiel in Samtens is a popular indoor climbing facility where you and your children can climb ten meters high following instructions. If you want to do something exciting with your child, a trip to the climbing hall is just the thing.
If you want to race down a summer toboggan run in the summer, you can do this on the summer toboggan run in Bergen. The fun is suitable for all ages. The bob glides as if on rails, and derailing is almost impossible. On rainy days, fun pools, like the one in
Sellin, are extremely popular. In the 106-meter-long slide, the outdoor pool, and the current channel, your children can romp to their heart's content.
A must is a ride on the narrow-gauge steam railway Rasender Roland. You can reach the home station in Putbus from your vacation apartment or holiday home in a short time. The Doll and Toy Museum is also worth a visit for children and adults.
