Join us in the moor! In and around Aurich, there are numerous raised bog areas: Kollrunger Moor, Brockzeteler Moor, Berumerfehner-Meerhusener Moor, and the Ewiges Meer Nature Reserve and its surroundings. The centerpiece is the Eternal Sea, the largest raised bog lake in Germany. Surrounding the city are numerous larger and smaller nature reserves and natural monuments. Make a detour to the Großsteingrab Tannenhausen. This is a 5,000-year-old megalithic tomb of the Funnel Beaker culture. Artifacts discovered during research, such as bowls, funnel beakers, shoulder vessels, collar bottles, and stone tools, are displayed in the Historical Museum. Admission for adults is €5, and for children only €2.50. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM (as of November 2023). In Aurich itself, a tour through the city is worthwhile. Numerous buildings are under monument protection. Landmarks include the Lambertikirche and the small Pingelhus at the former harbor. Experience authentic Aurich at Drogerie Maaß. The drugstore has been family-owned since 1855, and stepping inside feels like traveling back centuries. A similarly quaint experience can be had at Aurich's oldest pub, "Zur ewigen Lampe."
Ready to head to your cozy holiday home? Then let's go! There's plenty of entertainment throughout the year. Markets and festivals define the annual cycle. The fifth season kicks off with the Aurich City Festival in August. The city center transforms into a party and gourmet mile. In July, the Wine & Gourmet Festival is celebrated under brightly lit sun sails at the market square. Further cultural enjoyment awaits you in the surrounding area. The musical summer in various coastal towns of the North Sea is Germany's oldest classical music festival covering a wide area. At the Gezeitenfestival in the East Frisian landscape, sophisticated art meets venues with special flair. A huge fun event is the mudflat sledding race in Krummhörn-Upleward.
The East Frisian peninsula is perfect for a beach holiday in Aurich. The North Sea is not far away; after a short car ride, you can reach Norden-Norddeich, Neuharlingersiel, or Greetsiel. The East Frisian Islands are also a worthwhile destination. The city itself, though a bit away from the coast, also offers beach fun and water activities. The Aurich harbor on the Ems-Jade Canal offers a boat rental service. With motor and pedal boats, kayaks, and hydro-bikes, you can explore the waterway. The excursion ship MS Stadt Aurich sails from the harbor to Emden and Ihlow. Your children will love the recreational area at Badesee Tannenhausen. The lake's excellent water quality and fine gravel beach have earned it the nickname "Rimini of East Frisia." For fun in and on the water, you can rent beach chairs, pedal boats, canoes, beach loungers, and bicycles. The lake also features a wakeboarding and water skiing facility with ten obstacles. Trained instructors will introduce you to the sport. Afterwards, you can refuel at the beach bar. Directly by the lake, there is a holiday home settlement. Enjoy your first coffee in the morning with a lake view, jump into the water straight from your holiday home, and end the day comfortably in your apartment – that's what your perfect holiday day looks like. Your privately-owned holiday home offers all the amenities you need for a successful family vacation. Speaking of family: There's plenty on offer for the youngest vacationers in Aurich. On rainy days, you can go on a research and discovery journey with your kids at the Miraculum. The hands-on museum transports you to distant lands and cultures and has exciting adventures in store. Currently, the museum is closed for renovations, and a reopening date has not yet been set (as of November 2023). In the family-friendly and wellness bath De Baalje, you can splash around any time of year. In addition to the indoor area with a giant slide, a family-friendly city beach awaits the water enthusiasts. Sporty kids can let off steam in Germany's largest indoor skate hall, prove their courage in the climbing forest, or explore the moor landscape from horseback at one of the riding stables. If your family also includes a dog, you are also in the right place in East Frisia. Many holiday apartments are ideal for a holiday with a dog. Your private hosts have a heart for animals and have equipped their houses accordingly. The affordable holiday apartments are located in a quiet area and usually have a garden. For your four-legged friend's bathing fun, there is a fenced dog beach at Tannhauser Lake. The surrounding nature invites you and your four-legged friend for a peaceful walk.
On the East Frisian coast, food comes directly from the sea. Fish is available in all variations here. Particularly tasty are the flatfish, especially plaice. Another specialty is the local shrimp. They taste best when bought directly on the North Sea coast and peeled while sitting on the dike in the sun. You should also try the famous matjes herring from Emden. This cult delicacy is also called the "Sushi of the North" and is popular in both traditional and modern variations. Furthermore, East Frisians like to cook hearty dishes. Bacon, blood and mettwurst sausages, beans, pancakes, and potato dishes are the stuff that true seafarers rave about. Dare to try traditional dishes like Labskaus or Kohl and Pinkel. The latter is a North German groat sausage that is very hearty and nutritious. With so much hearty food, a shot of Korn or Friesengeist for digestion is also appropriate. The East Frisian tea ceremony is also famous – it warms the body and soul on cool days.
A museum worth visiting, in addition to the Historical Museum Aurich, is the Mühlenfachmuseum in the Stiftsmühle. In the mill, you can experience firsthand how flour is made from grain using the power of the wind. One of the most popular attractions in the surrounding area is the Moormuseum Moordorf in Südbrookmerland. The open-air museum depicts the often arduous history of settlement in the pristine moor landscape. From the history of the region, it's just a step into the 21st century, to the present and its art. A popular photo motif for visitors is the Sous-Turm at Aurich's market square, a 25-meter-high sculpture by artist Albert Sous. New and modern is also the Energy and Experience Center, which playfully approaches the energy sources of the future. Opening hours for the main and off-season, as well as all admission prices with discounts, can be found here. The Aurich Art Association invites renowned contemporary artists to exhibitions in the pavilion.
