The iconic landmark of Wilhelmshaven is the impressive Kaiser-Wilhelm Bridge, built over 100 years ago as the largest swing bridge in Europe at the time, and still unique in Germany today. Also worth seeing is the Town Hall, known as the "Castle by the Sea". The building is a striking brick construction with a 50-meter-high tower. Particularly noteworthy within the city are the two historic mills that are fully functional again. The Kopperhörner Mill is a gallery Dutch mill with a wind rose and a stop on the Frisian Mill Road. In the rural district of Sengwarden, you will find the Sengwarder Mill, a thatched gallery Dutch mill with a tail. During your vacation in a private apartment in Wilhelmshaven, don't miss the historic castles Kniphausen on the western outskirts or Siebethsburg in the district of the same name. Also impressive are the museum ships at Bontekai. The Captain Meyer and the lightship Weser offer fascinating insights into the maritime world and can be visited free of charge.
The Weekend at the Jade is Wilhelmshaven's largest festival, held annually in July. It features changing themes and programs such as a vintage car meeting, a dragon boat race, or a colorful closing fireworks display. Nature lovers will enjoy the Wilhelmshaven Porpoise Days in April, when you can observe these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat. Wilhelmshaven is not without reason also known as the Green City by the Sea. The city area has numerous green spaces and parks that are well-maintained. The Rüstringer City Park with the City Park Canal and large pond facilities is definitely worth a visit. Near the park is the Rosarium with about 3,000 roses from over 500 varieties and various exotic trees that can be admired.
Vacation apartments in Wilhelmshaven are also fairly priced for families. Relax together at Südstrand in a beach chair or stroll along the lively promenade. Action awaits at the Nautimo Adventure Pool. Your kids will enjoy fast slides, diving platforms, or a climbing wall. But adults are not left out either. The sauna landscape leaves little to be desired and pampers you from head to toe. The pool area is open daily from 10 AM to 10 PM, and from 9 AM on weekends. (As of August 2023) Also worth visiting is the Aquarium Wilhelmshaven with more than 300 species of marine inhabitants from around the globe. It gets especially exciting when seals are fed by drone. The aquarium is open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM. Admission is €20 for adults and €13 for children up to 15 years old. (As of August 2023)
Relax on the promenade and enjoy the culinary delicacies of Wilhelmshaven on the Jade Bay. Due to its location directly on the water, the region is a mecca for fish and seafood lovers. Labskaus or Matjes are particularly popular in this North Sea gem. Every July, the city center hosts the world's largest Labskaus meal. The record stands at an incredible 10,612 servings sold in 2005. The maritime festival is enhanced by great music and the best atmosphere in a unique culinary mile.
A top highlight for culture enthusiasts is the German Naval Museum at Südstrand. Open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM (as of August 2023), here you can learn more about the country's naval history. There is also an interesting exhibition at the Wadden Sea Visitor Center opposite the Naval Museum. Not only will you learn essential information about the Wadden Sea and see a 14-meter-long skeleton with plastinated organs of a stranded sperm whale, but you can also enjoy a breathtaking view of the water from the panoramic terrace. The cultural hub is the Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven, which features various art exhibitions that will thrill art fans. A cultural highlight is the Festival of Small Arts, held at the Cultural Center Pumpwerk. There, you can also regularly attend music concerts or readings during a vacation with a holiday home or apartment.
