In 1797, Napoleon brought about the decline of the Republic of St. Mark. In the centuries before, the Venetians shaped the entire Adriatic region. The winged lion of St. Mark can be found across Istria, for example, above house entrances. The Old Rakalj (Stari Rakalj) is a ruin situated on a hill above the beach, offering fantastic panoramic views of the Adriatic and the hinterland. In recent years, more and more remains of Old Rakalj have been excavated. In the town center, there is a 16th-century noble palace which houses the municipal magistrate. Rakalj was long famous for its pottery. An ethnographic collection in the birthplace of writer Mijo Mirković houses an exhibition on the cultural history of the town. Pula's history dates back to antiquity, and a visit is worth it, especially to see the Amphitheater, which used to hold more than 20,000 spectators.
The area around your vacation home in Rakalj is perfect for a relaxing holiday by the sea. The Harbor Beach is located a bit off the beaten path in a bay framed by rocks. The beach consists of medium-sized pebbles, and the water is crystal clear. The Kalavojna Beach, also a pebble beach, can be reached in a few minutes from Rakalj, and is also suitable for bathing with dogs. The secluded Zbirac beach is hidden away from the road, guaranteeing peace and relaxation. For those who wish to refresh themselves at home before going out, a vacation with a pool in Rakalj is the perfect choice.
Around your holiday home in Rakalj, there is a wide selection of fine restaurants and rustic Konobas, as the simpler taverns in Croatia are called. These are usually equipped with a large wood-fired grill. Istria is rich in fresh, delicious ingredients: wild asparagus, fish and seafood from the Adriatic, game, porcini mushrooms and truffles from the forests, wine and olive oil. The Istrian cuisine has preserved many traditions of the Venetians, who ruled the region for many centuries. Risotto (rižoto) can be found in various variations on almost all menus: risotto with truffles or porcini mushrooms, with wild asparagus, with scampi, or as a black variant with squid. For fish and seafood lovers, we recommend brodet and buzara. These are fish pots with various small fish and sometimes crabs or mussels, as well as wine and vegetables. To accompany the wine, the sheep's cheese from the island of Pag (paški sir) or air-dried ham (pršut) are suitable. Among the wines, the white malvasia and the žlahtina from the island Krk are highly regarded by connoisseurs.
Located in the southeast of the peninsula Istria, the small village of Rakalj is on the western shore of the Bay of Raša on the Adriatic coast. You can easily reach your private vacation rental in Rakalj via the airport of Pula. It takes less than half an hour by rental car from the airport to your accommodation in Rakalj. If you travel from southern Germany with your car, the journey takes about seven hours. The route takes you through Austria and Slovenia.
