What do you need to experience in Osterhever?

Enjoying the Northern Landscape

The most prominent landmark in Osterhever is St. Martin's Church, which dates back to the 12th century. Inside, there are numerous artworks, especially carvings from several centuries. Some of the works have an interesting history: during the Reformation, the Catholic pieces disappeared into the attic or cellar and were rediscovered centuries later. These include the baptismal angel and the Madonna on the crescent moon. Hiking on the Eiderstedt peninsula and in the Wadden Sea are highlights of the region. Its vast landscape, beaches, and dunes are perfect for a vacation with your four-legged family members. For a vacation with dogs in Eiderstedt, numerous cozy apartments and holiday homes are available where dogs are welcome guests. Dog beaches are located in St. Peter-Ording, Vollerwiek at Süderdeich, and Tönning. Now book a cozy holiday accommodation or a property with modern amenities in one of Germany's most beautiful regions directly on the sandy beach with a garden or terrace. Nothing stands in the way of your peaceful stay by the sea between the sea dike, fields, and mudflat hiking. Also, take a trip to Garding in Westerhever, to Poppenbüll, and explore the surrounding islands and their environments.

Where can I eat out in Osterhever?

Frisian robust – The Cuisine of Schleswig-Holstein

Look forward to a culinary vacation in Osterhever. Fish is naturally a staple on the menus of local restaurants. Whether from the Baltic or North Sea, the fish is fresh and usually served with plenty of sauce. As they say in the north, fish must swim. Flounder and plaice are highly popular, as well as sole, pike, mackerel, herring, and eel. Not to forget: the famous North Sea shrimp! Freshly peeled from the cutter or as a shrimp sandwich, they taste best. Specialties of the Schleswig-Holstein cuisine include dishes that combine sweet and savory ingredients, such as bean stew with pears and bacon. More of an acquired taste, but worth trying: Schwarzsauer. This slaughter soup is made from pig's blood, belly meat, snout, and feet. Flour dumplings, applesauce, or prunes are served as sides, and true connoisseurs sprinkle everything with a pinch of sugar. From the salt marshes of the coastal landscape come the finest lambs, and in the hinterland, you should definitely try the ham specialties. Around your apartment or holiday home in Osterhever, you will find plenty of restaurants and inns to suit every taste. Afterwards, you can take a walk on the sandy beach or go mudflat hiking.

How do I come to Osterhever?

Getting to Osterhever

The small North Frisian community of Osterhever, or Osterhever Koog (Danish: Østerhever), is located on the Eiderstedt peninsula northeast of St. Peter-Ording and northwest of Tönning at the edge of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can easily reach your cozy apartment or private holiday home with a terrace, garden, and modern amenities by bus and train. From Hamburg, travel to Husum and then take the North Sea Railway (NOB) to St. Peter-Ording on Eiderstedt. From Kiel, there is an hourly regional train connection to Eiderstedt. By car, you can reach your accommodation in Osterhever from Hamburg via the A7 and A23 highways. From Heide, continue on the B5 federal road. Just before Tönning, you cross the Eider and are now on Eiderstedt. Here, the B202 federal road turns towards St. Peter-Ording. Then, turn right again towards Osterhever. From the north, drive through Husum and then along the North Sea coast to Osterhever. Book accommodation or a property with modern amenities tailored to your personal preferences and enjoy your vacation in peace near the sea and North Frisia. Nothing stands in the way of your beach holiday among many diverse islands!
