The landmark of the high-sea island is Lange Anna, a 47-meter-tall rock. The Guillemot Rock is populated by thousands of seabirds. Both sights can be well observed from the circular trail starting at Oberland. A special event is the Guillemot Jump in June. During this event, the still flightless young birds jump from their nests and land in the North Sea or on the rocky tidal flats. With the dune ferry, you can visit the neighboring island, where you can observe groups of seals and grey seals from a safe distance. On the History Theme Trail, you can learn more about Heligoland at over 16 stations. A special experience is the tour through the Civil Air Raid Shelter from World War II. The St. Nicolai Church on Oberland is also worth seeing.
Events take place throughout the year. Highlights of the year include social, cultural, and sporting events. The Störtebeker Opti Cup is a regatta aimed at Optimist sailors and takes place at the end of July or beginning of August. Popular events include the Island Festival and the Börteboat Regatta on August 10. A special day for all Heligolanders is March 1, which commemorates the return of the island after World War II.
Heligoland is perfect for a beach vacation. Great natural beaches are located both on the dune and on the main island. On the small island, the water is always nearby, and many accommodations offer sea views. Besides the sea, you can swim in the Mare Friscium leisure pool. Families especially appreciate the play area, while spa-goers enjoy the extensive sauna landscape. The seawater swimming pool has the following opening hours (as of September 2023): • Mo-Th, Sat: 8 AM – 6 PM • Fri: 8 AM – 9 PM • Sun: 11 AM – 6 PM During your vacation, you should definitely take an island tour. These are also offered with the Börteboat. In July, your children can also get creative in the sandcastle competition. Heligoland is also suitable for a vacation with dogs. Many holiday homes allow and welcome pets. Please note that there is a leash requirement throughout the island. However, there are some off-leash areas, including the North Beach of the island. You are not allowed to bring your dog to the dune, as the entire area is a nature reserve.
Lobster is as synonymous with Heligoland as Lange Anna. The Knieper, the claws of the edible crab, are also a popular dish here. Of course, there is also fresh fish directly from the North Sea. If you've had enough of fish, try the meat from Galloway cattle and moorland sheep. You can enjoy these specialties in one of the restaurants or prepare them yourself in your holiday apartment on Heligoland. If you enjoy fishing, you can catch your own dinner from one of the piers or on a fishing trip in a Börteboat.
The many lobster shacks invite you to stroll around. These colorful booths, once used by fishermen for living and working, are now protected as historical monuments and house restaurants, galleries, and souvenir shops. You can even get married here! In the open-air area of the Heligoland Museum, you can visit further replicas of the lobster shacks. Inside the museum itself, you will find exhibitions about the history of Heligoland. The museum is open daily from April to October from 10 AM to 2:30 PM (as of September 2023). Admission is 5€. An exhibition is dedicated to author James Krüss, who was born on the island of Heligoland. But not only Krüss was on Heligoland. Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote his famous "Song of the Germans" here. Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, Friedrich Hebbel, Heinrich Heine, and Franz Kafka also visited the island. On the Culture Trail, you can learn more about the writers and Heligoland's culture at 15 stations.
