The historic old town of Leer is one of the most popular attractions in East Frisia. Here, there are 365 buildings under monument protection. The town hall of Leer, reminiscent of the Dutch Renaissance, was built in 1894. It forms an impressive ensemble with the Historical Weigh House (Dutch High Baroque). The district court from 1720 is also in Baroque style. It is a former palace. Many of the downtown houses are attributed to Classicism or Historicism. Particularly noteworthy is the Clasen's House, built in 1806. A trio of buildings on Brunnenstraße includes the headquarters of the Bünting company. Many of the centrally located holiday apartments and houses also reflect the styles of past epochs. Other significant buildings include the Leda Barrage and the water tower. The Jann Berghaus Bridge is one of the largest folding bridges in Europe. Additionally, there are four castles. The Harderwykenburg dates back to the first half of the 15th century. The Haneburg houses the county adult education center. The Evenburg was reconstructed from 2004 to 2006. It is surrounded by a beautiful landscape park. The Philippsburg is a Baroque palace from the 18th century.
If you have booked a vacation with a private apartment or holiday home, you can also get to know Leer and its residents at numerous events and gatherings. Since 1508, the Gallimarkt has been held every autumn. It is one of the largest fairs in Northern Germany and East Frisia. Additionally, a livestock market is held in the Ostfriesenhalle. Another major highlight is the Ostfrieslandschau, a fair for clubs and companies from the region. The annual Ossiloop is a running event that starts in Julianenpark and ends in Bensersiel.
