Travel guide Reit im Winkl
Fresh summers and guaranteed snow in winter
Reit im Winkl is recognized as a health resort. It is located in the so-called Kaiserwinkl at almost 1,000 meters in the magnificent Chiemgau Alps in Bavaria and is thus the highest situated municipality in the Taunusstein. The area is surrounded by extensive forests. The mountains rise up to 1776 meters at Dürrnbachhorn and 1961 meters at Sonntagshorn. The altitude ensures that the summer heat is mild and the nights are pleasantly cool. The average temperatures in summer are just over 17°. In the winter months, the surrounding mountains form a so-called cold air lake. If you choose an apartment or a holiday home in winter, snow is guaranteed. Compared to other places at the same altitude, Reit im Winkl receives significantly more snow, which stays longer – optimal conditions for a
holiday in the mountains. Something special is an accommodation with a view of the snow-covered Wilder Kaiser. Whether you enjoy skiing or cross-country skiing - with numerous slopes or trails, there is something for everyone.
Discover many churches on hikes or by bike
The first parish church St. Pankratius dates back to the year 1393, when at the behest of the Bishop of Chiemsee, the wooden village church was replaced by a stone church. It was damaged several times and rebuilt, and in 1911 it was replaced by the current parish church with an interior in Neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau style according to the plans of the architect Josef Elsner. An architecturally exciting church can be discovered on the Winklmoos-Alm: the mountain church St. Johann im Gebirg from the 1960s with a wall made of boulders and a fully glazed front wall to the courtyard. Several small chapels in the surrounding forests and mountains are suitable for leisurely day trips on foot or by bike. The excursion destinations are all in the vicinity of your holiday home. The clear air and the extensive forests ensure pure relaxation during your planned activities.
Small but fine museums and a year-round event calendar
Reit im Winkl has a few small but fine museums that inform about the local customs and the cultural history of the area. From your centrally located accommodation, it's just a stone's throw to the ski museum. The house displays exhibits from three centuries. In the local history museum, you can see what life was like here a hundred years ago. With the Reit im Winkl inclusive Card and the Chiemsee Guest Card, you have free admission. In the museum of sacred art, a so-called "Holy Grave" is displayed, which has been set up in the
Chiemgau during Easter time since the Baroque period. Speaking of Easter: The Palm Sunday blessing and the Easter fire are part of the long list of cultural events such as Maypole erecting, various processions, and village festivals. A special tip is a visit to the farmers' theater. The Bavarians are known for their punchy humor and a good dose of peasant cunning, as the saying goes.
Brotzeit, fish, and small delicacies
Where, if not in Chiemgau and Bavaria, do people know how to eat well and heartily? The quality of the regional cuisine is a true delight. From your apartment, it is not far to the next affordable inn, fine restaurants, or quiet mountain huts. Of course, when thinking of specialties from Upper Bavaria, you first think of sausages, pretzels, sauerkraut, and beer. However, the real highlights of the regional cuisine are fish specialties from the local lakes. Steckelfisch is white fish grilled on a wooden stick. For example, freshly caught whitefish from the rivers are put on the skewer. The fish is then wrapped in paper with the stick and served. The best addresses for traditional Bavarian cuisine are the good old inns and parlors. There you will find a decent Brotzeit with regional "Schmankerln," the Bavarian tapas, and local meat specialties, especially pork, at any time of the day. Test the quality of the cuisine with the traditional pork roast from the shoulder. It should not be too lean and must come with a crispy crust. If you want to cook in your apartment, the local markets and farm shops offer the best fruits and vegetables, eggs, sausage and cheese, and fresh meat from the health resort and the region.
Leisure activities for families
Rent a comfortably furnished house for the whole family at a reasonable price from private owners with plenty of space, Wi-Fi, and a cozy parlor. Many apartments are family-friendly and have a washing machine. For children, there are numerous excursion destinations and several adventure, climbing, fairy tale, and amusement parks in the vicinity of Reit im Winkl. In winter, children enjoy the toboggan runs in the village and the child-friendly ski slopes in the Winklmoos/Steinplatte ski area. Many apartments and holiday homes here are suitable for a
holiday with a dog. Anyone who has spent a holiday in Bavaria with their four-legged friend knows that the region is one of the most dog-friendly areas in all of Germany. In most restaurants and private homes, it is allowed to bring dogs inside. Get used to your conversation partners first asking about your dog and whether it needs water, for example. Dogs enjoy long hikes through forests and over alpine meadows. They can romp and run around freely. Hike with your four-legged friend through the idyllic landscape and look forward to a relaxing nature-filled vacation.
Skiing in winter, hiking in summer
Together with the Austrian area of Steinplatte, the Winklmoos-Alm forms an extensive ski and hiking area in the health resort of Reit im Winkl. The high plateau is located at over 1,100 meters altitude and offers pure nature. Book an affordable apartment privately in the midst of the breathtaking landscape. The ski area extends into Tyrol. In winter, head to the ski jump, cross-country skiing, or snow hiking, and in the evening, head to the city to the mulled wine stand. In the summer months, cycling, tennis, or swimming are on the agenda. There are enough alternatives for everyone to enjoy their leisure time. A trip from your holiday home to the Berchtesgaden region and to Lake Königssee is one of the highlights in Upper Bavaria. During a boat trip on the emerald-green lake, enjoy the view of the Berchtesgaden Alps. Just 30 kilometers away lies Lake Chiemsee, the great sea of Chiemgau and Bavaria. Visit the attractions of Herrenchiemsee Castle on Herreninsel and the monastery on Fraueninsel, or rent a bike and explore the surroundings. Maybe swap the apartment with a mountain view for a holiday home with a view of Lake Chiemsee? A culinary insider tip is a visit to the monastery shop on Fraueninsel. But be careful when buying the many delicacies: The handmade marzipan is addictive. Enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of the region and spend relaxing holiday days. A dream for every tourist.
