Travel guide Heringsdorf
The North Can Be So Beautiful – Sunshine Guaranteed
Your holiday home or apartment with Wi-Fi and a fireplace in Heringsdorf on
Usedom is located in the sunniest region of Germany. The island boasts nearly 2,000 hours of sunshine each year, more than Milan! Accordingly, precipitation levels are low. Usedom ranks in the lower third of all measuring stations in Germany. The only downside for a summer holiday: the most rain falls in July. The driest month is the chilly February. However, the bathing temperatures for a
beach holiday in Heringsdorf average around 20°C in the summer months. The air temperature rises to an average of 23°C in summer, while in winter it hovers around freezing point. What could be more beautiful than a pier wrapped in white powder snow? Late summer, between August and October, is a wonderful time for hiking. There's little rain and the sun still wonderfully warms the days. The mild stimulating climate on Usedom is particularly soothing and healing during a walk along the miles-long beach, especially for skin diseases and cardiovascular problems. Depending on the wind direction, the maritime sea climate with its salty moist air or the dry forest climate from the hinterland dominates. Forests and beaches are perfect for a
holiday with a dog in Heringsdorf: beach walks at the designated dog beaches of the island, frolicking in the Baltic Sea, and hiking through the forests. This is how the four-legged spa guests like it. One of the most popular dog beaches is located near your holiday home with a terrace in Heringsdorf. Enjoy sunny weather in a beach chair or explore the region with the resort railway. On cool days or in bad weather, visit the Baltic Sea Thermal Baths and relax.
Culinary Usedom
Here they still exist: real fish sandwiches with freshly caught herring from the
Baltic Sea. Your holiday apartment or private holiday home in Heringsdorf (aptly named) is located in a gourmet paradise. Here, small cutters still head out to the Baltic Sea daily to land sustainably caught fish by hand. A spring specialty is the garfish, which comes to the Baltic Sea only to spawn, otherwise living in the Mediterranean and Atlantic. The winter months, on the other hand, belong to the Baltic whitefish with its delicious firm flesh. A delicacy, the catch of which is strictly limited. The fresh fish is immediately landed at the fish markets or marinated or smoked. During the Usedom Herring Weeks in April, even more attention is paid to these tasty fish. For those who prefer something more exclusive, there is a wide selection of restaurants of all price ranges and tastes. A small selection: Try the herb cuisine at Kulm Eck near your holiday apartment in Heringsdorf, Mediterranean cuisine at Arielle in
Bansin, or the brasserie at Ahlbecker Hof in
Ahlbeck. Enjoy an extraordinary ten-course menu every year on the Saturday after Ascension Day at the pier in Ahlbeck. During a culinary walk on the beach at sunset from Ahlbeck to Bansin, there are ten extraordinary stations, each offering a palate pleasure prepared by the chefs of the best restaurants on Usedom. Seated at tables set up on the fine sand of the Baltic Sea beach, you feast while the sun sets in the sea. Other highlights include the Garfish Weeks at the port of Freest, the Inventors' Days, and in autumn the Usedom Game Weeks with specialties from the local forests. If you like to cook in your own holiday apartment in Heringsdorf, you will find regular markets with different focuses in all seaside resorts. Larger weekly markets are located in the cities of Greifswald, Wolgast, and Anklam. There, you will find regional and seasonal products from local farmers and producers.
The Architecture of the Imperial Resorts and a Magnificent Nature
In the vicinity of your holiday apartment or private holiday home in Heringsdorf, there are plenty of sights to discover. A popular starting point and meeting place is the prominent pier in Heringsdorf. At over 500 meters, it is the longest pier in Germany. The predecessor structure was last destroyed by arson in 1958. Another magnificent pier is located in the district of Ahlbeck. The 280-meter-long bridge dates back to 1899. During the filming of the Loriot movie "Papa ante Portas" in the 1990s, it was renovated. The bridge in Bansin is similarly long, but lacks the grand buildings found on the other two mentioned. Passenger ships regularly travel between the piers, allowing visits to other seaside resorts to be combined through a seaside resort hopping on the waterway. The ships go as far as Poland to the towns of Swinemünde (Świnoujście) and Misdroy (Międzyzdroje).
The oldest and most famous building in the town is the so-called White Castle. Built in 1825 by the famous classical architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel as Bülow's lodging house. The builder Bülow had other buildings constructed in the vicinity of the Kulm, such as Villa Achterkerke. Stroll along the beach promenade and admire the beauty and elegance of the beach villas or the famous spa architecture built in the 19th century. Some of the buildings house magnificent salons and gentlemen's rooms. Many villas hide exciting stories of their residents and illustrious guests. For example, the painter Lyonel Feininger lived in Villa Oppenheim from 1909 to 1912. Walk past Villa Diana, Villa Augusta, Villa Stadt, and Villa Oechler. All houses here have names. A little further out, in Villa Irmgard, the writer Maxim Gorky cured his tuberculosis in 1922. Today, the villa houses a local museum and a small exhibition commemorating the famous writer. Art enthusiasts will enjoy the Kunstpavillon Heringsdorf. In addition to exhibitions, the architecturally interesting building regularly hosts events, concerts, and readings. In the eponymous main town of the island of Usedom, the Harbor Festival plays take place every year. Small but fine, on the other hand, is the private Shell Museum in Heringsdorf. Another attraction is the Manfred von Ardenne Public Observatory. If you want to take a look at distant galaxies, here you have the opportunity in the summer months to observe the starry sky through a 25-cm reflecting telescope. You will notice that there are no churches in the town centers of the newly created seaside resorts. These are located outside the towns, mostly in small forest areas. Nothing should remind visitors of everyday life at home and diminish the joys of vacation. The Church in the Woods and the Ahlbecker Church date back to the 19th century. The Bansin Church was only completed in the 20th century. Book an apartment with a balcony or a holiday accommodation with a terrace and Wi-Fi according to your personal wishes right by the sea and visit numerous excursion destinations.
