Due to its sheltered location behind the Wustrow Peninsula, Rerik is an ancient settlement area. The place was originally called Ol. Gartz, or Old Gaarz, and was first documented in 1230. Among the oldest testimonies of the settlement history are the megalithic tombs in Neu Gaarz, believed to have been created between 3500 and 2900 BC.
