Through the Centuries – Attractions in the Baltic Sea Resort of Rerik

Due to its sheltered location behind the Wustrow Peninsula, Rerik is an ancient settlement area. The place was originally called Ol. Gartz, or Old Gaarz, and was first documented in 1230. On this historic ground, you will find numerous witnesses today that reflect the history of the region. Among the oldest testimonies of the settlement history are the megalithic tombs in Neu Gaarz, believed to have been created between 3500 and 2900 BC. In total, eight such megalithic sites can be discovered in the Baltic Sea resort of Rerik. The local museum traces the history from the first settlement to the seaside resort. Worth seeing and experiencing are the pier and Haffplatz, as well as the fishing pier. The lighthouse in Bastorf between Rerik and Kühlungsborn is a landmark of the Baltic coast. A unique natural landscape awaits you at the Salzhaff with its salt meadows and dunes. The salt meadows of the Salzhaff provide numerous coastal birds with a perfect breeding area. You can explore this unique natural landscape with the ships MS Ostseebad Rerik and MS Salzhaff. One of the tours takes you through the Haff to the island of Poel. Many visitors are fascinated by the mysterious Wustrow Peninsula. From the Wehrmacht to the withdrawal of the Soviet army, it was used militarily. Today it belongs to a private investor and can currently only be explored from the water or with a wagon ride across the island. The rugged cliffs are also among the natural beauties.
