Altenkirchen gets its name from the parish church of the same name. This church is one of the most important attractions in the area. The oldest part dates back to 1168, making it one of the oldest sacred buildings on the island. A stone from Jaromarsburg was used in the church at that time. Jaromarsburg was a cult site dedicated to the war god Svantovit and was located at the northern tip of Cape Arkona from the 9th to the 12th century. To prevent damage to the remains of the castle, you are not allowed to visit it. However, from the nearby Peilturm, you can get a good overview of the site. Besides the Peilturm, the two lighthouses are worth seeing. And if you are at Cape Arkona: Enjoy the spectacular landscape! If you feel like fresh air and exercise, it is recommended to walk along the high coastal path to the cape. Be sure to stroll through the picturesque village of Putgarten. The northernmost municipality of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is closed to private traffic. A detour to the fishing village of Vitt is also worthwhile. The village is located in a shore gorge on the steep coast. It is protected as a historic monument and has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. You can discover more attractions in the vicinity of your holiday home in Altenkirchen. Wiek on the Wieker Bodden is a charming town with a pretty harbor. In Juliusruh, a late Baroque garden invites you to stroll.
The Störtebeker Festival is one of the cultural highlights on Rügen. The show on the large open-air stage is spectacular. Over 100 participants, horses, and even ships are brought in to offer the audience an unparalleled spectacle. The visit becomes a special event when you set sail from the port of Breege into the Bodden.
The island of Rügen is an ideal destination for families. There is something for all generations and tastes. The Wittow Peninsula has several fine beaches, making this part of Rügen recommended for a beach holiday in Altenkirchen. A bathing paradise for children is the Schaabe. This spit connects the two peninsulas of Jasmund and Wittow and measures almost twelve kilometers. Between the baths of Breege-Juliusruh and Glowe, there is a fine sandy beach. More beautiful beaches can be found in Dranske on the Baltic Sea beach and on the Bodden beach. The beach at Drewoldke is a quiet natural beach. If you want more entertainment and action with the kids, you should take a trip to Binz. Here, children's hearts beat faster, as there are particularly many leisure activities. Little adventurers are also drawn to nature. And nature on Rügen is particularly exciting. Excursions are therefore recommended to the Jasmund National Park, the Rügen Natural Heritage Center, or the Königsstuhl National Park Center. Another worthwhile excursion destination is the island of Hiddensee. You can start, for example, from the port of Wiek, which is in the immediate vicinity of your holiday apartment in Altenkirchen. For a rainy day, a trip to the Ozeaneum in Stralsund is a good option. Dive into the underwater world of the Baltic Sea. Rügen's largest indoor playground is the Pirate Island in Putbus. In addition to a large fun park, the House Upside Down awaits you. Here, the world is literally turned upside down. A holiday apartment in Altenkirchen is the ideal base camp for your excursions. The privately owned holiday homes are located in a quiet area. All accommodations are comfortably furnished and modernly equipped. To ensure that the whole family feels comfortable on holiday, your landlords have thought of everything. Child-friendly furniture is just as much a part of it as a TV or Wi-Fi. In the kitchen of your house, hobby cooks will find everything they need to prepare meals. Some affordable holiday homes also have a large garden. Often, even sandboxes and play equipment for the youngest are available. Altenkirchen is also very suitable for a holiday with a dog on the Wittow Peninsula. In some holiday accommodations, your dog is a welcome guest. On the natural beaches of the peninsula, your dog is either allowed or tolerated.
In the past, the cuisine on Rügen was primarily one thing: hearty. It had to be quick and filling for a long time. Today, restaurateurs pamper guests with old recipes in a new guise. Traditional dishes are prepared with sophistication. Emphasis is placed on regional ingredients as well as seasonal ones. Cabbage is a staple in many variations in the cuisine of Rügen. After all, the Wittow Peninsula is home to Rügen's largest cabbage growing area. Taste it! From the Baltic Sea and the Bodden, cod, pike-perch, pike, and eel join the menu. Other specialties include sea buckthorn. It is refined in various ways on Rügen. You can buy it as juice, jelly, puree, tea, wine, or liqueur. You can enjoy these delicacies either in one of the restaurants in Altenkirchen or in the surrounding areas where you will find gastronomic establishments to suit every taste. A special culinary experience awaits you at the Schifferkrug in Dranske. Beer has been served here since 1455, making the Schifferkrug in the Kuhle district Rügen's oldest inn. Alternatively, buy your ingredients fresh and whip up a tasty meal in the kitchen of your holiday apartment.
Art and culture are omnipresent on Rügen, including on the Wittow Peninsula. From the lighthouses at Cape Arkona, you have a fantastic view over the sea. The old lighthouse also houses a museum. The Peilturm contains an art museum and is used as a studio. In Altenkirchen, the painter Heike Herrmann runs the Kunstsalon. And at the Rügenhof Arkona, the former horse stables house exhibition workshops. Watch the artisans at work and purchase a souvenir from the studios. A particularly beautiful idea is the Wittow village calendar in Juliusruh. In the frame of a decommissioned cigarette machine, the artist Bert Kunath creates a new calendar page every month.
Rügen is located far in the north of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Your holiday home in Altenkirchen is almost at the northernmost tip, on the Wittow Peninsula. For those traveling by car, from the west, use the A1 and A20 motorways. From Berlin, take the Berlin Ring and then the A11 and A20. In Stralsund, you can cross by ferry or use the Rügendamm or Rügen Bridge. To reach the Wittow Peninsula, you can either take the Schaabe or the Wittow Ferry. By public transport, the train takes you via Stralsund to places like Sassnitz, from where you can continue your journey to the holiday apartment by bus. By plane, you can reach your accommodation in Altenkirchen via Rostock Airport, which has daily flights from Munich or Stuttgart. You can then reach your house by renting a car.
