If you rent an affordable apartment or a holiday home with a wood stove from a private owner at a reasonable price, you will likely be staying on the "foundations" of an ancient Slavic settlement, traces of which date back well before the 9th century. Already in 1165, "Vikr" was mentioned in documents as a Slavic fortified settlement, which was secured with a rampart and built around a castle. The original name refers to a trading Slavic community on a bay. Later designations indicate that honey was traded here. Follow the old traces in the tranquil Wiek and visit the Gothic brick church built by the Cistercian monks in 1400 as a hall church. It is richly decorated in the Baroque style and has a beautiful wooden equestrian statue of St. George from the 15th century. Enjoy atmospheric sunsets at the old Bodden harbor, converted into Marina Wiek in 2003. Originally built in 1890, it dates back to early medieval predecessors. Here, the notorious pirate Klaus Störtebeker and his men are said to have terrorized the population. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the harbor served as a fishing and loading harbor for chalk mined at Cape Arkona. The loading bridge built during World War I but never completed is Wiek's landmark. Restored in 2014, it now serves as a walkable historical attraction. From here, cast a dreamy glance at the Baltic Sea and the Island of Hiddensee. The Wiek chalk bridge is an industrial-technical monument from 1914 and is among the first structures in the Baltic region made entirely of reinforced concrete. Definitely worth a visit!
Just a stone's throw from your apartment with a balcony or your affordable holiday home with a terrace right by the water is the unspoiled Bug peninsula. It forms the southernmost tip of the Wittow Peninsula and separates the Baltic Sea from the Bodden. In the 1930s, it was a military base and restricted area. This circumstance is the reason for its ecological intactness. Board the Wittow ferry and circle the region, then walk with your dog or the whole family along the Schaabe with its 11 km long beach. In the north of the island, be sure to visit the legendary Cape Arkona, and of course, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed chalk cliffs with the famous "Emperor's Chair." At Cape Arkona, you will find, among other historical attractions, the reconstructed Jaromarsburg, a Slavic settlement from the 7th century. Take time to visit the art-historically interesting Altenkirchen, which is located directly next to Wiek. Don't miss visiting the neighboring island. All you need to do is board the ferry that docks in the harbor. On Hiddensee, you can spend a whole day and more without a hint of boredom. Golden Baltic beaches, mild sun, and a light salt breeze – that's the perfect vacation! A very special experience for both big and small vacationers are the Störtebeker Festivals, which take place from the end of June to the beginning of September in Ralswiek. Here, you experience the pirates live on one of the most beautiful natural stages. Your perfectly furnished holiday accommodation or harbor house awaits you and is the perfect starting point for excursions.
The sheltered Wiek lagoon offers excellent conditions for relaxed boat trips that are fun for both young and old. Beginners can learn sailing, kiting, and surfing here – while advanced enthusiasts may prefer the open Baltic Sea side. Here and there, the steady sea breeze provides the right lift. Quiet family-friendly holiday homes and apartments from private owners are often located close to the beach in Wiek and also impress with sea views. They also offer everything needed for a carefree vacation. Whether you have rented an apartment or a house at a reasonable price directly on the Baltic beach with a garden, terrace, or balcony with a beautiful view, the facilities are always top-notch. Bicycles – like the obligatory Wi-Fi – are often included, so nothing stands in the way of your enjoyable excursion with loved ones. Take the time to explore the beaches of the Baltic Sea. The shallow shores are paradise for small children, who can splash carefree in the clean waters of the Baltic Sea. But Wiek offers not only family-friendly houses and apartments, but is also well-prepared for a vacation with dogs. Pets are very welcome here. So be sure to bring your dog on vacation, and enjoy the beautiful beach walks together. Also visit Binz, Juliusruh, Dranske, or Putgarten, or explore the promenade and rent bicycles to enjoy the Baltic beach.
From your house or apartment, you are guaranteed not to be far from trying one of the culinary specialties of the region. You will be amazed at how versatile Rügen's cuisine is. Pork, lamb, and even wild boar from certified farms make for traditionally hearty, yet outstanding quality dishes. This includes Baltic cod stuffed with bacon and the rich "Rügen eel soup." Try the braised meat with raisins and plums or the pork back filled with minced meat and baking plums. The Bodden provides Rügen with a great variety of fish, including pike, eel, zander, and of course, Baltic herring. Fried, cooked, and naturally pickled: Rügen's culinary fish specialties are simple yet very delicious. At the end, the famous red fruit pudding is a must.
The range of art and culture here is most abundant during the summer months. Weekly concerts at the open-air stage and at the harbor alternate with the popular church concerts. Large and small festivals offer wonderful handicrafts, regional products from land and sea, and musical entertainment. The harbor festival scores with maritime flair, while the harvest festival and the local festival impress with land products of excellent quality available on Rügen. Those interested in the history of the place and its surroundings should visit the small local history museum.
Wiek is located in the southwest of the Wittow peninsula, also known as Windland, on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen. You can reach Rügen by car, train, or boat. Since Wiek has a modern marina, arriving on your own keel is definitely an option. If you are coming from the west by car, take the A 20 motorway via Hamburg and Lübeck to Stralsund. Here, switch to the federal highway B 96 towards Bergen/Sassnitz. From Samtens, head towards Gingst/Trent, where you take the car ferry to Wittow and thus reach your holiday region. Another way to get to the Wittow peninsula is via the federal highway B 96 through Bergen, Lietzow, and Sagard. Passing through the towns of Glowe, Juliusruh, and Altenkirchen, you will reach your destination. The German Federal Railway takes you via Stralsund to Bergen and to the regional train station in Sagard on Rügen. Here, you need to switch to regional buses of the RPNV, or arrange to be picked up by your landlords in advance. Book your personal, lovingly furnished accommodation with a water view by the bathing beach.
