The region is a paradise for hikers and bikers in summer and equally great for a fulfilling vacation with your dog in Hochsauerland. This is ensured not only by beautiful accommodations with gardens but also by hundreds of excellently developed hiking trails that satisfy both long-distance hikers and those who prefer shorter circular routes. Famous long-distance hiking trails include the Rothaarsteig, which starts in Dillenburg and ends in Brilon. Less known, but no less beautiful, are the Hochsauerland Ridge Trail and the old Jacob's Pilgrimage Trail between Attendorn and Winterberg. In Meschede, "Ballonfahrten Sauerland" offers balloon rides, certainly one of the region's highlights, though only for those without a fear of heights! A visit to the town of Brilon is always worthwhile because of the beautiful old half-timbered houses, the town hall, numerous monuments, and the interesting "Haus Hövener" museum. A lovely excursion takes you to the Plästerlegge Nature Reserve and to the Bestwig Waterfall, the highest waterfall in North Rhine-Westphalia. If you're already there, it's not far to "Fort Fun," the Wild West-themed adventure park. Among the natural highlights are the Kahle Asten and the Bruchhauser Stones above the Gierskoppbach Valley.
Hochsauerland attracts visitors in winter with many excellently developed ski resorts featuring top trails for cross-country and downhill skiing, as well as snow hiking, sledding, ice skating, bobsledding, and snowboarding. Perhaps you'll be tempted to try something exotic and learn husky trekking from professionals? When it comes to winter destinations in Hochsauerland, Winterberg is at the forefront. "Nomen est omen" as the Winterberg region offers the best skiing and winter sports opportunities, for example in the "Skiliftkarussell Winterberg," which with its total of 27 km of slopes is the largest ski area in the Rothaar Mountains. Active vacationers with children – and of course without – also have plenty to enjoy in summer. It's no coincidence that Sauerland is called the land of hiking trails and lakes. Hiking, climbing in attractive climbing parks, cycling, or golfing are highly popular in Hochsauerland. The bike paths along rivers or on old railway tracks are particularly beautiful. Parents wanting to introduce their children to nature can rely on exciting fairy-tale and theme hiking trails near their booked vacation house or apartment. Children also have great fun in the numerous wildlife parks and recreational facilities of Hochsauerland. For example, in Schmallenberg there's "Thiko’s Kinderland" or the "Center Parcs" park in Medebach. The latter features "Aventura 2.0," described as "Europe's longest play equipment," offering an incredible children's play landscape with all-weather slides, tunnels, zip lines, competitive courses, and much more. For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, there are fishing ponds ("Angleroase Weddelsee"), numerous lakes, and suitable riverbanks. Pony and riding farms are practically everywhere in Hochsauerland – also near your beautiful accommodation!
"Potthucke" is a "pot squatter" - a dish that is also a major specialty in the greater Hochsauerland region. It is a type of oven-baked casserole made from potato dough with meat fillings. This hearty dish is served with sweet beet syrup or rye bread. The abundant forests provide a seasonal supply of various game dishes on regional menus. Another meat-heavy specialty is minced pork with ham pieces, known in Sauerland as "Hallenberger Saumagen." Look out for the ecological organization "Bergweide Sauerland," which ensures the best quality of meat and humane animal husbandry! Besides cows, goats native to Sauerland also provide milk for excellent raw milk cheeses, which are among the top regional products. However, less milk and more top-quality beers are consumed in Sauerland. Who hasn't heard of the large internationally known breweries like Krombacher, Veltins, and Warsteiner! Yet, Hochsauerland and neighboring regions have much to offer in delicious beers from smaller breweries, which are actually much more exciting. Just try them out on your own vacation home terrace!
The Hochsauerland district extends in the northeastern part of the Rothaar Mountains at elevations between 700 to 843 meters above sea level. Hochsauerland has no fixed geopolitical boundaries and is partly located in southeastern North Rhine-Westphalia and partly in western Hesse. You can reach your vacation apartment or house in Hochsauerland by car via the A4, A45, or A46 highways and then – depending on the location of your accommodation – via federal roads B55, B480, B236.
On average, holiday apartments and houses in Hochsauerland cost 194 € per night.
Compared to other regions, vacation in Meschede or Bestwig is particularly cheap. You can rent a beautiful vacation apartment or holiday home here from 41 € per night.
