Great vacation in the cozy holiday home.

We spent two very nice vacation weeks in the holiday home Three Birches. Very nice hosts, beautiful surroundings, and very idyllic location with hiking trails right from the front door. Our dog was also warmly welcomed and greeted with treats. In the mornings, despite the dog, we had visits from a doe and her fawns :-). We would love to come back.... Jutta, Uwe, and Sam

Without a doubt, the cultural highlights of the region are in Brilon Stadt! The core city has been meticulously restored, so numerous monuments and squares shine in their best attire. Culturally very important is the Brilon town hall from the 13th century, surrounded by beautiful half-timbered houses on the lovely market square. In front of it flows the also historical Petruskump (fountain). However, the landmark of Brilon is the church of St. Petrus and St. Andreas from the 13th/14th century with its 63 m high tower in Baroque style. In addition to the many protected churches and chapels in and around Brilon, the "Haus Hövener" museum is a MUST-DO. Housed in an original residential building, the museum contains unique testimonies of the Hövener craft family with their inventory collected over four centuries. Where can I eat out in Brilon?

The specialties from the kitchen of Hochsauerland in Brilon are typical of South Westphalia. Here you can enjoy "Schnibbelbohnensuppe," "Sauerländer Rinderwurst," "Knochenwurst," and of course, "Sauerländer Schinken." Beyond the borders of Sauerland, "Siegerländer Krüstchen" is well-known, consisting of a "bread edge" topped with a schnitzel and fried egg. Do you know what "Potthucke" is? It's a potato casserole made from raw and cooked, coarsely grated potatoes mixed with cream/sour cream, bacon, or sausage cubes. This dish, which sticks to the bottom of the pot and hence called "Das-Was-Im-Pott-Hockt," is served with pumpernickel and beet syrup. Easier to understand are "Ajjjerkaes" or "Sejerlänner Riewekooche," if you pronounce the words out loud (Siegerland egg cheese and Siegerland potato pancakes). "Eierkäs" is a dessert, and the regional potato pancakes are often eaten as bread. The mixture of grated potatoes is baked in the oven. "Möpkebrot" might also confuse you, as it is a cooked sausage specialty that includes grains and is refined with apples or raisins. During your gourmet vacation in Sauerland, you must try the Sauerland beer "Märzen," which is still brewed traditionally and therefore takes much longer to reach your table.
