Travel guide Rottach-Egern
Rottach-Egern: A Haven of Cozy Charm
Once you've settled into your peaceful holiday home or affordable vacation rental in Rottach-Egern, a selection of interesting attractions awaits you. In the center of Rottach-Egern, be sure to visit the ancient
St. Laurentius Church from the 15th century. A delightful attraction for children is the lovingly curated
Carriage Museum, housed in the former Gsotthaberhof. Here, you'll find carriages, sleds, wagons, old equipment, and plenty of authentic history about life in a mountain village. Children will enjoy an intuitive, playful interaction with the exhibits. An architectural landmark is the
Evangelical Resurrection Church, designed by the renowned architect Olaf Andreas Gulbransson in the style of classical modernism, setting architectural standards for churches.
Only Bavarians Celebrate Like This
Make sure to be in Rottach-Egern on August 31st and experience the fantastic
Coachman's Festival. You'll be amazed by the expertly restored wagons and teams. Over 200 festively decorated horses pull old coaches from the Seehotel Überfahrt by the lake to the festival grounds in the district of Enterrottach. The parade is accompanied by thousands of enthusiastic spectators, bands, and beautiful traditional groups. Don't miss the beautiful tradition of blessing horses and people at the Rosskapelle. At the festival grounds, numerous stands cater to your culinary needs, offering Bavarian specialties and locally brewed beers from Tegernsee.
Among the most interesting attractions is the
Olaf Gulbransson Museum in Tegernsee City. Housed in a classically modern building by architect Sep Ruff, it displays paintings and caricatures by the Norwegian artist Olaf Gulbrandsson, one of the most famous caricaturists of Classical Modernism and a regular contributor to the Munich satire magazine Simplicissimus. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM. Admission for adults 18 and over is €12.
Dining in Rottach-Egern, Bavaria
Your house or mountain cabin, or your apartment, is surely just a stone's throw away from a quaint inn where you should indulge in delicious Bavarian treats like Kasnocken and Zwetschgendatschi. In 2018, the Tegernsee-Schliersee region was honored with the "100 Bavarian Culinary Sites" award. Here, 12 restaurateurs have teamed up with 6 local producers to create a genuine Bavarian cuisine using sustainable, local products.
This special "Gourmet Land" offers delicacies from game hunted locally, hand-picked herbs, the natural cheese dairy in Kreuth, home-bred fish from the local "Ducal Fish Farm," or freshly caught fish from the lake. Many great restaurants near your accommodation, for example in Kreuth, are waiting for you.
Rottach-Egern: A Family Holiday with Dogs to Fall in Love With
Located in the heart of the Bavarian Alps, Lake Tegernsee is perfect for those who love hiking and want to spend a quiet holiday in a well-maintained atmosphere between the lake and the mountains. Be sure to bring your dog on vacation, as hardly any other state offers a more ideal
vacation with dogs than Bavaria! Enjoy nature on hiking trails of varying lengths suitable for all fitness levels, where children can also have a lot of fun. Beautifully laid-out bike paths lead your whole family to charming excursion destinations. A treat for both big and small water lovers is the
Lake and Warm Bath. Here, you can relax in pleasant 32° warm water from May to September, while the little ones play in the children's pool or on the lawn. The current channel and the rapid water slide should of course also be tried.
Your children and you don't have to miss out on winter activities in the summer; you can use the
summer toboggan run in neighboring Schliersee. Quiet and cozy but anything but outdated are the
family-friendly vacation apartments and affordable holiday homes available in abundance here. They feature family-oriented, ultra-modern facilities and often boast a large garden, perfect as a play area. In winter, this is the perfect ski area for skiing or sledding for both young and old.
The Beauties of Lake Tegernsee: Not to Be Missed
Your apartment or holiday accommodation in the beautiful location of Rottach-Egern is an ideal starting point for wonderful excursions to historically significant places and nature around the lake. The majestic, picturesquely situated
Tegernsee Castle – originally a significant Benedictine monastery from the 8th century – is an excellent destination for the whole family. Today, it houses the Ducal Bavarian Brewery, a high school worth peeking into the magnificent auditorium, two excellent restaurants, and the private chambers of the dukes from the Wittelsbach family.
A true natural landmark is right outside your vacation apartment or holiday home in the Sutten area. Take time to climb the Wallberg – the local mountain of Rottach-Egern – or ride comfortably with the
Wallberg Cable Car, which operates between Rottach-Egern and the summit. Enjoy the view of the lake sparkling in the sun rays and the surrounding area at your feet. By the way: your dog rides for free in the Wallberg gondola.
For those who love wellness programs and want to boost their health,
Bad Wiessee and its iodine-sulfur bath, the strongest iodine-sulfur source
in Germany, are highly recommended. Nature lovers will enjoy the Rottach River. The 10 km long river, winding through the valley, is known for the Rottach Waterfalls, which cascade about 30 m down into the valley. If you want to take a 30-minute walk there, you can do so from the parking lot in Enterrottach. The
Sibli Waterfall and the
Josefsthaler Waterfalls are other beautiful attractions offering hikers and walkers wonderful tours. Here, you can enjoy pristine natural beauties like the fairy-tale waterfall, perfect for an enchanted hiking tour in winter.
