Cozy holiday apartment for two people

We felt very comfortable in this lovingly furnished, cozy, and quietly located vacation apartment and spent a very nice holiday on Borkum. The bed is very comfortable, as is the sofa. The kitchen is well equipped. The whole apartment was very clean.
It is worth mentioning the very friendly and uncomplicated communication with Ms. Wehler from the beginning, who responded immediately to questions. We would love to come back!

We were at the Tschörtner holiday home for the second time with our dachshund mix, and everything was perfect. Mr. Tschörtner is always approachable and very nice. The location is great, the South Beach is very easily accessible on foot, as are shopping facilities.

A little dream

Upon arrival, we were warmly/funnily and deliciously welcomed by Mrs. Wenke (homemade jam and sea buckthorn liqueur). The apartment is designed for two people and lacks nothing. I would like to highlight Mrs. Wenke and the cleanliness of the apartment, which is to be credited to her. The landlords were also easily reachable by email and very nice. The location is great, about 100 m to the large island market and a few minutes' walk to the main beach and the seal island and the beautiful beach huts.

Exploring Borkum

Landmarks for Seafaring

The oldest building on the island and a very special landmark is the Old Lighthouse. You can find it in the western part of the island, at the center of Borkum. A New Lighthouse is located not far from there. It is still active and visitors are welcome to tour it. Climb to the top of the tower and enjoy the breathtaking view over the entire island and the sea. Today, Borkum also has three well-preserved Kaaps, which also served as navigation aids for sailors. Two of these massive brick monuments are also located on the west side of the island, with another at the northeast end, directly on a dune in the Eastland Dunes.

Ships, Captains, and Their History

Another exciting attraction can be found in Borkum's harbor. The former Borkumriff Lightship was decommissioned in 1988 and now serves as an information point for the National Park. Another sign of Borkum's maritime history are the well-preserved whalebone fences found in some places. For example, in front of the property of the former Captain Meyer on Wilhelm-Bakker-Straße, which is surrounded by a fence made of whale jawbones. Also interesting is the North Sea Aquarium. Here, in 16 different themed tanks, you can see the beauty and diversity of the North Sea wildlife and their different habitats. This can be experienced from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 AM and 4 PM. What do you need to experience on Borkum?

Untouched Nature, the "Greune Stee," and the Wadden Sea National Park

Borkum is a natural beauty with its extensive beaches and dune landscapes. The surrounding Wadden Sea is best explored through guided walks in the eastern part of the island. There, you can explore both the sandy paths of the dune landscape and the green hinterland. A secluded natural experience awaits you in the far east of Borkum. Behind the long dune chain "De Hahlingties" in the southeast of Borkum, the wide sandy beach "Hoge Hörn" spreads out, which is rarely discovered by visitors and therefore offers plenty of space and optimal relaxation.

What can you experience on Borkum with children?

Vacation on Borkum for the Whole Family

Borkum is excellent for your family vacation with a dog. The long beaches, various playgrounds, and diverse biking and hiking trails invite you to linger and offer optimal activities for the whole family. For cooler weather days, a visit to Gezeitenland Adventure Pool is recommended. While your children explore the various pools, water games, and geysers, you can relax in the wellness area. The pool is open daily from 10 AM to 6:30 PM. (As of August 2023)

The culinary specialties from the sea are characteristic of the cuisine on Borkum. Everything comes fresh from the sea directly to the table. For example, at the traditional Alt Borkum. A bit away from the center, this place is one of the insider tips in town. Dine luxuriously and elegantly at Restaurant "Palée". The unique sea view offers the opportunity to experience romantic sunsets during your meal. For a quick snack in between, Imbiss Knurrhahn is recommended. From homemade fish cakes to shrimp and salmon, the range here extends to fish pans – which you can also take back to your affordable private vacation rental. If you like trying new things, don't miss the crossover cuisine at the centrally located "In Udnis". Under the motto "Borkum meets Spain," North Sea fish is served here with Spanish spices in an original and diverse way.

Discover Borkum's Whaling-Influenced Local Customs

Among the most exciting attractions is the Heimatmuseum Dykhus (Dike House). The entrance to the museum is through a gate made of whale bones, which also serves as a reminder of Borkum's whaling heritage. Inside the museum, you can not only learn about the turbulent history of Borkum and its residents but also marvel at a 15-meter-long skeleton of a sperm whale. In the town, there are also three noteworthy churches:

The Catholic Church Maria Meeresstern – a neo-Gothic brick building with an octagonal bell tower
The Reformed Church – influenced by Art Nouveau and houses a notable votive ship
The Lutheran Christ Church – impressive, arched stained glass windows
