The Idyllic Lake District around Leipzig
Not just the city: When thinking of a vacation in Leipzig, one might hastily conclude it's purely a city trip in Saxony. However, Leipzig and especially its green surroundings offer much more possibilities for designing your holiday.
Enjoy numerous swimming lakes: For instance, Markkleeberg, located between Lake Cospuden and Lake Markkleeberg, is a great choice. Lake Cospuden, affectionately known as "Cossi," is a true visitor magnet. Located to the south of Leipzig, this lake invites you with a two-kilometer-long sandy beach on its northern shore and a small harbor on the east. The nearby Aue Forest also makes this area ideal for a vacation with your dog in Markkleeberg.
Alternative and Classical Culture Meet in Leipzig
● The cultural center of the region is the city of Leipzig, in a dazzling, diverse, and seemingly contradictory way. On one hand, the Leipzig Opera and the Theater look back on a centuries-old, significant tradition. Yet, even in the theater, Leipzig's diversity is evident. Besides classical theater, the alternative theater scene is organized in the Free Scene Leipzig.
● The Gewandhaus: is one of the premier addresses in Germany for orchestral music. In addition to its main house, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the oldest and one of the most renowned concert orchestras in Germany, performs at the Leipzig Opera and St. Thomas Church. The famous St. Thomas Choir emerged from the attached monastery.
● Conne Island: Also well-known throughout Germany, albeit in very different circles, is Conne Island in the left-alternative district of Connewitz. There, concerts by punk, metal, and alternative bands take place, as well as hip-hop and techno events. Besides concert events, bands find rehearsal rooms there, the neighborhood gathers in the beer garden, and cultural evenings are hosted. Connewitz and Conne Island, together with the high culture around the St. Thomas Choir and the opera, form the multi-layered character of Leipzig.
Much More Than Leipzig Allerlei on Leipzig's Plates
● "A Gose", the typical top-fermented beer of Leipzig breweries is also a must-try. Almost forgotten, this typical Leipzig beer was rediscovered by a tradition-conscious restaurateur and has since become the cult drink of the city.
● "Leipzig Allerlei" is today a vegetable dish. In its original form, crayfish, bread dumplings, and morels were part of the dish.
● "Leipzig Lark": Once, as the name suggests, it was a pie filled with songbird meat. Today, the dish is much more benign, with the shortcrust pastry containing nuts, strawberry jam, or marzipan instead of a little bird.
● Restaurant tip: Culture meets culinary delights at "Auerbach's Keller". This barrel cellar was immortalized in literature by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe when he incorporated it into his work "Faust." Thus, the restaurant is today a must-visit for guests in Leipzig.
