For a city trip to the Kiel Fjord, the city of Kiel is the best starting point to explore the attractions of the region. The maritime overall image of the city includes the Maritime Museum in the former fish auction hall at Sartorikai. Right next door is the Museum Bridge with historic ships like the lifeboat Hindenburg or the buoy tender Bussard. The lantern in front of the museum was once the lantern of the lightship Alexander von Humboldt. The Zoological Museum also has a connection to the sea with various whale skeletons. The maritime theme continues with a visit to the 85-meter-high Naval Memorial in Laboe. It dates back to 1936 and commemorates the fallen of World War I. However, the absolute highlight of Kiel and the Kiel Fjord is the annual sailing regatta Kiel Week. Last time, more than 3,500 ships participated in the spectacle. Spread across the city, over 2,000 individual events, exhibitions, concerts, performances, and sports events take place.
The Kiel Fjord is a paradise for mermaids and mermen. Between Kiel and the open Baltic Sea, numerous beaches invite you to swim and engage in water sports. Fine sandy beaches can be found at Schilksee, Strande, Laboe, Heidkate, Friedrichsort (Falckensteiner Beach), Heikendorf, and Schönberg. The Olympic marina of Schilksee is a center of sailing, and at Laboe, the seawater swimming pool offers genuine beach feeling even in bad weather — including a view of the Baltic Sea. The aquarium of the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research allows a deep insight into the world of marine inhabitants. The tanks are home to native and tropical fish species, crabs, seahorses, and corals. A highlight are the resident seals. More animals can be found in the five animal enclosures at Suchsdorf, Tannenberg, Hasseldieksdamm, Uhlenkrog, and Hammer. Here live among others bison and deer, Icelandic horses, Cameroon sheep, and aurochs. The animal parks are open all year round and admission is free.
The proximity to the sea as well as the many freshwater inflows of the Kiel Fjord provide a wide range of fresh fish. The most famous are probably the Kiel sprats, a type of herring that is smoked until golden. In addition, we find cod, salmon, sea trout, herring, as well as freshwater fish such as pike and perch in the Kiel Fjord. A peculiarity of the North is the sweet-savory flavor combination — broke sööt — called broken sweetness. We find it in dishes like pears, beans and bacon, pork cheek, and even kale. A popular specialty in summer is the elderberry soup Kiel style, made from the juice of the berries of the black elder.
The Kiel Fjord stretches over 17 kilometers from the Baltic Sea inland to the city center of Kiel. On the east shore are the Baltic Sea resort Laboe and the Baltic Peninsula Wagrien with the historical landscape of Probstei, while on the west shore are Strande, Falckensteiner Beach, and the Danish Wohld. The Kiel Canal flows into the Kiel Fjord on the west shore, ensuring constant ship traffic. You can reach your holiday apartment on the Kiel Fjord by long-distance train via Kiel's main station and then by regional and bus transport. By car, coming from Hamburg, take the A7 and A215 motorways to Kiel. From there, continue on the federal road 503 on the west shore and the federal road B502 on the east shore to your holiday accommodation on the Kiel Fjord.
