The Holiday home
Our holiday house "El Cargol" for 2 to 4 persons is situated in the small, remote mountain village Urbanya in the French East Pyrenees at 850 m altitude in a sunny southern position. The holiday home has received the brand of the Regional Natural Park of the Catalan Pyrenees and we are a member of the network "Gîtes de France" (2 ears).
The highlights of the house include a shaded summer terrace and a sunny winter terrace, which are directly accessible from the kitchen. Seating furniture for the outdoor areas is available. In the fully equipped kitchen with dining area you will find all the utensils you need to prepare large and small meals. A cosy sitting area on the large wood-burning stove invites you to read or relax on cooler evenings in the off-season or in winter.
A comfortable living room with a well-equipped bookshelf including hiking maps and information on the surroundings, a sofa and a futon armchair (optional extra bed) can serve as a play area for your children, for reading, planning your activities.
One bedroom with a large double bed adjoins the kitchen and dining area and another bedroom with two single beds adjoins the living room. If required, we can provide a baby cot.
The sanitary area consists of a bathroom with a large shower cubicle and washbasin and a separate toilet.
Kitchen equipment includes gas stove, electric oven, dishwasher, large fridge-freezer, coffee machine, toaster and a complete set of cooking utensils and dishes. We also provide basic ingredients for cooking (spices, oil, vinegar, preserves) and for your breakfast (coffee, tea).
Other features are: Washing machine, TV, DVD and CD player, electric radiator, wood stove (wood is provided by us), baby cot, hair dryer, ironing board, library with books in German, English and French, hiking maps, CDs and DVDs.
Outside you will find a charcoal grill next to the terrace. There is also a small vegetable garden, which is also directly adjacent to the house. In summer you can harvest tomatoes, courgettes and herbs here.
Sheets and towels are included in the price.
Wood consumption and electricity are also included in the price.

Location and surroundings of object
Urbanya is on the one hand a mountain village, on the other hand influenced by the climatic influences of the Mediterranean Sea. It lies at the transition between a garrigue vegetation with lavender, thyme, rosemary and holm oaks and typical mountain forests with pines and beech forests that have spread up to the high granite plateaus of the mountain zones. You can discover these contrasting landscapes directly from the village on foot or by mountain bike.
Numerous hiking trails, forest tracks and abandoned irrigation channels allow family hikes or sporty mountain tours up to the "Madres", the highest mountain of the massif at 2469 metres. The nature reserve of Nohèdes is only 8 km away and from here you can discover the famous "Lacs de Nohèdes", beautiful mountain lakes, on well signposted paths.
In summer, the Association of Catalan Nature Reserves offers numerous free family guided tours to discover flora and fauna. A German speaking guide for whitewater climbing and cave tours is also available nearby. In winter, when there is snow, you can do wonderful tours with snowshoes.
Countless cultural treasures - monasteries, Romanesque churches, fortifications - are open all year round and look forward to your visit.
And if you are looking for a day on the beach or a hike along the rocky coast, Canet and its large sandy beaches 70 km away and Collioure 90 km away await you.

Petra comes from Stuttgart and settled in Toulouse in 1996 as a freelance translator. Dominique comes from Northern France, is a cartographer and has also lived in Southern France for a long time.
We have been exploring the Pyrenees on foot and by bike for 20 years. In Nohèdes, which lies directly on a nature reserve, our desire to actively engage in nature conservation is also expressed. We help to maintain hiking trails and track down unknown paths or those threatened with disappearance. It is a very special pleasure for us to share this passion and give tips for wonderful tours.
