Travel guide Zams
Zams Winter Sports and Summer Freshness
The inner alpine location in the Inn Valley is determined by the surrounding high mountain ranges. The basin ensures low precipitation and plenty of sunshine in winter. Slightly further north of
Landeck near Arlberg and the Lechtal Alps, the climate is characterized by significantly more precipitation, while it is even drier in the south at the highest peaks of the Alps. Temperatures rise to a maximum of 25 °C in summer. In the winter months, temperatures average between 2 and -4 °C – perfect for a
ski vacation in Zams. Whether summer or winter, the mountain world full of natural beauties is worth a visit at any time of the year.
Authentic Alpine Cuisine with Dumplings, Gröstl, and Brettljause
Austrian cuisine consists of more than Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz, and Kaiserschmarrn. Of course, the classics belong on every menu. But each federal state, including
Tyrol, has its own culinary tradition. Tyrolean dumplings come in all variations – with bacon, spinach, or cheese as Kaspressknödel. The Graukäse tastes different depending on its origin (each valley has its own cheese) and ripeness (from fresh to spicy). The Tyrolean Gröstl proves that Tyrolean cuisine is simple and nutritious while being incredibly delicious. Once invented as a leftover dish, it is now a popular main meal on traditional alpine huts. The Gröstl is a pan of potatoes, meat, and onions seasoned with pepper, salt, parsley, marjoram, and caraway. As a snack during a hike, the Tyrolean Brettljause with freshly baked bread, bacon, sausage, and cheese – all from the region – is suitable. For a cozy evening in front of the fireplace, the excellent wines from Italian South Tyrol are suitable. The most important wine-growing regions in Austria are
Styria and
Burgenland.
Snow, Forest, and Whitewater – Experience the Mountain
Compared to the side valleys, the Upper Inn Valley has preserved its originality. Here you can enjoy a
vacation in the mountains in the Tyrolean Oberland as it is written in the book – green alpine meadows in summer and white slopes in winter beckon. The Venet massif is a natural paradise for hikers, climbers, and mountain bikers. The European long-distance hiking trail E5, which leads from Oberstdorf to the Adriatic, runs directly through the town. One of the most exciting hiking destinations near Zams is the Zammer Lochputz, an enchanted gorge surrounded by many legends. The daring plunge into the valley with a dragon or paraglider from the slopes of the Venet. The Tyrolean Oberland is also a hotspot for rafting and canyoning. The popular excursion destination Zammer Lochputz fascinates with dizzying insights into one of the most beautiful wild waters of Tyrol. In winter, the Venetbahn opens up the Venet massif for skiers. The Venet cable car, a gondola lift, takes you directly from the town center in Zams in eight minutes to the local mountain of the TirolWest holiday region. Also, take a trip to Ischgl, Serfaus, Fiss, Ladis, and Tilg. Falterschein is the highest located hamlet of the eight hamlets of Zams. It is situated at an altitude of 1300 m with a magnificent view and is perfect for active hiking vacationers, as well as the Kaunergrat or the Kaunertal.
Castles, Palaces, Churches, and the Zammer Water World
Numerous sights can be reached on foot from your holiday home or apartment in the Zams holiday region. The landmark of the town is the Catholic parish church Zams Hl. Andreas. The special feature is the freestanding bell tower. In 1764, a major fire in Zams destroyed numerous buildings, including the church. Only the tower from the 17th century remained. A short hike takes you to the ruins of Kronburg, which sits between Zams and Schönwies on a steep rock. The castle was built by Hans von Starkenberg in the 14th century. In the neighboring town of Landeck, there is the eponymous castle from the end of the 13th century. Schloss Landeck is known nationwide as an event location. Markets, open-air cinema, concerts, and performances take place here regularly. A special feature of Zams is its close connection to water. A show hydroelectric power plant and the Zammer "water world" can be visited. The healing and soothing effect of the water can be felt in a Kneipp facility. For centuries, Zams has been closely connected to the crystal-clear water of the mountain rivers.
