At the foot of the Niederhaus fortress, the Ilz river first flows from the left into the Danube and shortly thereafter from the right, the Inn joins the Danube. Above the rivers to the north stands the Veste Oberhaus, one of the largest fortress complexes in Central Europe, which has housed various exhibitions on the city and history of Passau since 1991. The Passau Old Town, recreated by Italian artists in the 17th century after a city fire, is also fascinating. Picturesque winding alleys meander around the city's landmark: St. Stephen's Cathedral. Numerous romantic squares, such as the Cathedral Square, the Town Hall Square, and the Residence Square in the center of the Old Town, are ideal for a historical city stroll. Or how about an exciting boat trip along the extensive river promenades of the Danube? The "Bavarian Venice" offers a variety of boat tours. Altötting is also worth a visit: The largest Marian pilgrimage site, due to its history spanning over a thousand years in the heart of the old Bavarian tribal duchy, is also affectionately known as the "Heart of Bavaria." The Chapel of Grace with the "Black Madonna" from the 8th century is particularly worth seeing. The picturesque Baroque town of Schärding in Upper Austria and the cultural city of Linz are definitely worth a day trip during your holiday.
The Großer Arber, at 1456 m, is the highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest. As a widely visible, prominent landmark in Bavaria, it is equally popular with hikers and alpine sports enthusiasts. Here, you can comfortably ascend to the summit by cable car and enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The four peaks offer visitors diverse views of the surrounding Bavarian Forest.
Passauer Land is well-suited for a family vacation: Pullman City in Eging am See, an adventure park idyllically located on the edge of the Bavarian Forest, has been allowing children and adults to experience the "Wild West" since 1997. Pullman City is one of the top excursion destinations in the region. The Klosterwinkel Cycle Path leads from the Danube to the Rott, across the Danube Valley & Klosterwinkel and the Rottal. From the Sandbach/Donau Cycle Path ferry, the tour is signposted with the Klosterwinkel logo. Tip for a hiking vacation in Passauer Land: You hike from Vilshofen via Aldersbach with the Aldersbach Monastery and from there to Ortenburg. Along the way, don't miss the pilgrimage churches in Sammarei and Grongörgen. For relaxation in between, a visit to the Therme Bad Griesbach is recommended. When glittering ice crystals transform Passauer Land into a winter wonderland, young and old are drawn out into the snow. Enjoy the silence of the Bavarian Forest while winter hiking, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing, or be active while skiing, snowboarding, curling, ice skating—or even just sledding right outside your front door. For ambitious skiers, the well-developed ski resorts in the Bavarian Forest near Bodenmais are recommended during your vacation.
The local favorite dish has always been roast pork with potato dumplings and cabbage. Typical are also the Pfandl dishes based on sautéed potato or dumpling slices. Tip: The cozy Alte Bräuhaus in Passau serves Ochsenfetzerl and hearty Pfandl dishes at the suspension bridge with a view of the Veste Oberhaus. But fish is also on the menu in the region. In the "Zur Triftsperre" restaurant in the Halser Ilzschleifen nature reserve, freshly caught trout is also served on the sun terrace. Feel free to visit one of the beautiful weekly markets and find regional delicacies at a good price for your snack in the cozy, affordable vacation home or private apartment. What goes well with (almost) every meal is a beer (brewed in Bavaria for almost 1000 years) from one of the many regional breweries.
In the Passau holiday region, cultural customs and traditions are still actively preserved. St. Stephen's Cathedral in Passau is the mother church of the Danube East. The magnificent cathedral stands at the highest point of Passau's Old Town. The world's largest cathedral organ, with 17,974 pipes and 233 registers, resounds here. Be sure to attend one of the numerous organ concerts held here. In 1645, a ballroom was built at the Inn Bridge and equipped as a provisional opera house in 1771. In 1783, it was rebuilt into a classical court stage according to plans by Johann Georg Hagenauer and was redesigned several times in the 19th and 20th centuries. Travel back in time in Künzing. During a visit to the Quintana Museum, you embark on a journey through 7,000 years of settlement history, from the Neolithic period to the early Middle Ages. The neighboring Bavarian Forest region also has exciting offerings: Explore the small town of Hauzenberg with St. Vitus Church, which houses the Freudensee winged altar by Rueland Frueauf from the 15th century. Be sure to visit the King's Column in the Granite Center of the Bavarian Forest nearby during your holiday.

TUIfly, for example, flies to Linz and Salzburg from many German cities, including Hanover, Hamburg, and Stuttgart. The city of Passau is a stop for 2 ICE lines from Berlin via Leipzig and from Dortmund via Cologne and Frankfurt.
