In winter a popular destination for ski tourists, in summer an absolute highlight for hiking enthusiasts, Bodenmais is the ideal vacation spot. The region of the Bavarian Forest National Park around Bodenmais is one of only two remaining primeval forest areas in Europe. Enjoy unforgettable walks, and relax while GPS hiking or GEO-caching. Most attractions around Bodenmais can be comfortably "hiked" to, such as the Weißenstein Castle Ruins. Every two years, a large medieval festival takes place here: the Knight's Spectacle. Also, do not miss the highest waterfall in the Bavarian Forest National Park. If you like, you can climb right up to the waterfall on a small footbridge. The Großer Arbersee can be circled on a hiking trail along the shore. A special natural experience are the floating islands and the impressive Arbersee wall. Hike from the Arbersee to the excursion destination Mittagsplatzl and enjoy the panoramic view. The Silberberg also offers an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
The Great Arber, at nearly 1,500m, is the highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest. As a prominent landmark of the border mountains between Bavaria and Bohemia, it is equally popular with hikers and alpine sports enthusiasts. Here you can take the cable car up to the summit and enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The main summit with its summit cross, as well as the three subsidiary peaks, are ideal for hiking. The cable car also allows you to reach the summit comfortably and protected from the weather, making the mountain an ideal excursion destination for the family.
The summer toboggan run, the Bodenmais toboggan run, archery, and exciting playgrounds promise fun for children and relaxation for parents. Bodenmais was awarded the HolidayCheck Destination Award in 2016 as the most hospitable place in Germany. But Bodenmais is also particularly quiet and family-friendly. Around Bodenmais there are three exciting summer toboggan runs. A visit to the Bavarian Forest Museum Village, one of the largest open-air museums in Europe, is also worthwhile. The museum is open from: • Tu-Su: 10 – 17 hrs Admission prices are 7€ for adults, children up to 6 years enter free of charge when accompanied by parents. For cycling tours, a holiday apartment in Bodenmais is a good starting point, from there you are quickly on the Adalbert-Stifter cycle path or the Danube-Ilz cycle path. In Bodenmais, even the smallest children can take their first steps on skis, for example in ArBär Kinderland. There is also a children's ski park on the Adventure Mountain Silberberg with all-day care. In the winter season, the Großer Arber is the ideal winter sports area for alpine skiers, snowboarders, tobogganists, and snowshoe hikers. Also, take a trip to Arnbruck or other surrounding places.
Typical for the region are not only the roast pork with grated dumplings and cabbage but also the Pfandl dishes based on fried potato or dumpling slices. The well-known Schmarrn dishes were invented on the cast-iron stoves in mountain and hunter's huts. Hearty local delights come from home slaughters, such as kettle meat and sausages. But fish is also on the menu. Visit one of the beautiful weekly markets and find regional delicacies cheaply for your snack in the holiday apartment. The beer brewed here for almost 1000 years naturally tastes particularly good in Bavaria. Sample your way through the various local breweries. For those who like it strong: in the Schnaps Museum Gläserne Destille there are taste experiences of a special kind. Fine spirits and liqueurs are distilled here with great care. The opening hours are: • Mo-Fr: 10 – 17 hrs • Sa: 10 – 13 hrs
For culturally and historically interested visitors, Bodenmais has interesting attractions to offer. Particularly beautiful is the Catholic Parish Church from 1805 at the marketplace. The altar is adorned with a replica of the Loreto image of grace, which was carried in a solemn procession from Maisried to Bodenmais in 1705. Do not miss: the historical Silberberg Visitor Mine. A visit to one of the local glassblowing workshops is definitely worthwhile: the most famous is the Joska Glassblowing Workshop, which among other things makes trophies for winter sports. The attractions also include the Old Town Hall with its special exhibition on the history of mining.
