...you are very welcome at the Neue Schule Wasserkoog.
The school was built in 1949. Local and refugee children learned together in the classroom. Today, people from all over the world and from all walks of life meet at Neue Schule Wasserkoog. They meet in a house where there is something new to discover at every corner. A house where things from foreign and own cultures illuminate each other: Polish carved figures next to Egyptian seat cushions, grandma's collector's cup next to Moroccan bowls, African chairs next to contemporary art.
Wasserkoog is a place to breathe and come down, to celebrate and marvel - a place very close to the far horizon
The former schoolhouse has a living space of 250 square metres on four levels. It offers sleeping accommodation for 16 people. If needed, we can prepare additional sofas and mattresses for sleeping. You could also rent the small house with 6 beds or we can organise further sleeping facilities for you in the village.
If you want to have a party in the house, you can invite about 50 guests
By popular demand, we have upgraded our technical facilities and offer free Wi-Fi.
Due to the current pandemic situation, we would like to ask you to inform yourself in advance about the size and composition of your group
-group size and composition you may bring.
THE ROOM
The heart of the house was and is the former classroom. In the morning, the light falls through the many windows onto the natural wooden floor of the 60sqm hall. No piece of furniture has grown together with the room, everything can be moved and adapted to the wishes of the guests
The atmospheric room is suitable for meditation and yoga, as well as for dancing, playing music, working and theatre. Up to 30 people can dine here at festively set tables
If the walls could speak, they would tell of roaring festivals, rousing drum sessions, seasonal markets and international exhibitions. And the walls would whisper as they spoke of the quiet moments and the bright tears.
COOKING AND EATING
The kitchen is so spacious that several people can prepare food at the same time - while others sit around the round table chopping or sipping tea and chatting. Behind the wooden doors you will find a dishwasher and a fridge. Another large fridge with freezer compartment is in the basement
The kitchen is connected to the dining room by a large double door. The long table is easily enough for 18 people. A short wooden staircase leads from the dining room directly into the garden to the barbecue area or the hammock
Another double door connects the dining room with the large hall
THE CENTREPIECE
On the 1st floor is the Elm Room. A wonderful place for discussions and group work, for example, is the old Egyptian corn mill. Six gable windows provide magical light and an unobstructed view of the sky
Three bedrooms lead off from the elm room: One room has a double bed, the other two each sleep four, snooze and dream
A staircase made of elm wood leads further upstairs
UNDER THE ROOF
It is also really cosy under the roof. If you look up at the sky from here, you know what the weather will be like and - as we say here - who is coming to visit the day after tomorrow. On this level there are two bedrooms with two and four beds respectively, as well as a toilet and a bathroom with shower.
SOUTERRAIN
Beautiful illustrated books from all over the world, poetry and lyric poetry, spiritual and scientific - you will find it all in the library next to the stairs
There is a washstand with two basins in the large room and a double bed somewhat hidden behind the old bath tub. Thanks to the underfloor heating, it is cosy and warm. Through the windows you can watch the plant gnomes at work. A short staircase leads up to the garden
The two washrooms in the basement, each with a shower and toilet, have Moroccan flair.
THE GARDEN
The garden is for romping and hiding, for playing and lying in the hammock. It is a garden with old fruit trees, roses and magnificent berry bushes.
From the dining room you can go directly into the garden, to the stone labyrinth and the fire bowl with swivel barbecue. In the front part of the garden - protected by willows and lilac bushes - a long table can be set for at least 20 people.

Location and surroundings of object
The Neue Schule is located on the outskirts of Wasserkoog, a small Eiderstedt village. In recent years, many of the old farmhouses have been lovingly renovated.
The nearest bathing place can be reached by bicycle in ten minutes. On long summer days, villagers and guests swim here - provided the sea is there. The change between low and high tide characterises the landscape and life on the peninsula.
The large and well-known beaches of St. Peter Ording are about 20 kilometres away. Sand and sky as far as the eye can see. This unique landscape was declared a World Heritage Site in 2009.
In nearby Westhever, a beautiful walk leads through a bizarre salt marsh landscape to the postcard lighthouse and the offshore sandbanks.
At "Schietwedder" you can also explore the secrets of the sea on dry feet: at the Multimar Wattforum in Tönning or at the NABU Nature Centre in Kating. For those interested in technology, and not only for them, an excursion to the Eider barrage - a bulwark against the natural power of water - is worthwhile.
Many artists live and work on Eiderstedt and have joined forces in the KunstKlima association.
The Dünentherme in the centre of offers saunas with a view of the sea, a salt-water swimming pool with waves and sliding fun
The tranquil "Dutch town" of Friedrichstadt on the Treene offers a boat trip through the canals.
You feel more like a little shopping, grog or crab rolls? Also good. Husum, the birthplace of Theodor Storm, is half an hour away by car. A real highlight is the crocus blossom in the castle park.
