Unfortunately, Schloss Tönning was demolished in 1735. The few remnants are now displayed in the city park. The history of Tönning dates back to the 12th century. The historic harbor, as it still exists today, was established in 1613. It is now the centerpiece of the Old Town with its Dutch-influenced gabled houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The origins of St. Laurentius Church, whose baroque tower dates from 1703 to 1706, trace back to the 12th century. Until the opening of the Kiel Canal, Tönning was an important trading hub. Even the Dutch East India Company used the Tönning harbor on the Eiderstedt Peninsula as a stopover. Due to the tides, the harbor almost completely dries up. Keelboats then sink into the soft silt. The Eider Barrage is located at the mouth of the Eider into the North Sea near Tönning and at the border of the Tönning municipality. The main purpose of this largest German coastal protection structure is to protect against North Sea storm surges. Definitely worth a trip!
The Multimar Wattforum is an information center in Schleswig-Holstein for the idyllic Wadden Sea National Park. You can reach the Multimar Wattforum, open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM, on foot from your vacation apartment or your affordable holiday home in Tönning. Experience interactive knowledge transfer about the National Park and World Heritage Wadden Sea. In nearly 30 aquariums, the Multimar Wattforum presents the flora and fauna of the Wadden Sea. Dive into the world of fish and marine animals. Through a six by six meter panoramic window, you can peek into the underwater world of the largest aquarium in the house. Endangered animals such as catsharks and seahorses, which had disappeared from the North Sea, have been successfully bred in the aquariums of the Multimar Wattforum in Tönning. The impressive 17.5-meter-long replica of a sperm whale fascinates especially the younger visitors. The whale beached in 1997 off the coast of Denmark and is one of the main attractions here. However, these animals are rarely seen in the North Sea. The native whales include the harbor porpoises with a population of about 170,000 animals. Admission costs €12.50 for adults and €8 for children aged 4-15 (as of November 2023). Book a cozy furnished holiday accommodation or a house or apartment in the center with a balcony, terrace, playground, garden, parking space, and in a prime location, and enjoy your vacation with the family between nature reserves and beaches of North Frisia.
In Tönning on the idyllic Eiderstedt Peninsula, the whole family, including pets, will enjoy their stay. The holiday homes and apartments are perfectly suited for a vacation with a dog. The apartments are family-friendly and spaciously equipped. The solar-heated seawater outdoor pool is conveniently located just around the corner. Here, you can rent beach chairs and relax. For the children, there are swimming lessons, fun and action with the giant octopus, and a summer sports program. In the vicinity of Tönning, children can also explore the High Ropes Park in St. Peter Ording, the Pirate Sea in Büsum, and the Seal Station in Friedrichskoog. Adventurers can take a canoe tour on the Eider. But beware: It can be a wet affair. For endurance and nature experiences, extensive hikes through the mudflats and over the dikes in the Nature Adventure Area Katinger Watt are recommended. NABU Schleswig-Holstein invites you to a visitor center to learn about the enclosed conservation area. Get to know the many bird species that can be observed: lapwings, avocets, greylag geese, and sea eagles. Orchids even grow in the meadows. By the way: Dogs are welcome in Katinger Watt, provided they remain on a leash to not disturb other animals. Also, take a trip to Westerhever or Oldenswort, stroll along the Eider, or hike through idyllic nature reserves with your family.
The most famous specialties of Schleswig-Holstein's cuisine are, of course, fish and seafood. The shrimp from neighboring Büsum are also popular beyond the region. And the fish? It must swim, as the northerners say, so it is prepared with lots of butter or in cream sauce. One of the lesser-known dishes outside Schleswig-Holstein is the combination of green beans, pears, and bacon, often served with potatoes. The flavor combination of sweet and savory is called Broken sööt (Broken Sweet) in Frisian. You can also find it in Holsteiner sour meat, goose leg with lingonberries. The kale popular in the winter months comes with caramelized potatoes. Sweet side dishes also pair well with the famous Salt Marsh Lamb. The lambs (or Heidschnucken) find optimal grazing land on the dikes of the Eiderstedt Peninsula. Due to conservation reasons, the lambs are no longer allowed to graze directly on the salt marshes occasionally flooded by the Wadden Sea. Numerous restaurants within walking distance of your holiday home or your affordable private vacation rental invite you to taste the many delicacies of Schleswig-Holstein. The northerners' favorite drink to accompany meals is a cool, bitter beer. Those who want to cook in their own accommodation will find a wide selection of local products at the farm shops in the region and at the weekly market in Tönning (every Monday morning on the historic marketplace). In the vicinity of the market and the harbor, restaurants, cafes, and taverns also invite you to stop by for a drink.
The Packhaus in Tönning Harbor is the largest cultural center on the Eiderstedt Peninsula. It is located very close to your accommodation. In this historic building, cultural events, exhibitions, concerts, and markets take place. An annual art exhibition at the Historic Packhaus Tönning offers local artists from the Eiderstedt Peninsula and neighboring coastal towns the opportunity to present their works to the public. Several times a year, the venue attracts visitors with antique, arts and crafts, and flea markets. Those interested in the vibrant artist scene of the Eiderstedt Peninsula can find more information about artists and cultural creators of the region at Förderverein Kunstklima. Those who want to get creative can take courses in painting, drawing, and photography there. Music fans will especially enjoy the summer months when regular concerts take place outdoors on the historic marketplace.
