Are you still looking for the right holidaymakers for your holiday home or apartment?
In almost every town in the Lower Rhine, there are historical sights. No matter where you book your private holiday apartment or house, you are not far from the next excursion destinations. The cultural history of the region goes back many centuries. Start your journey through time at the Archaeological Park Xanten. Here, you can admire the urban construction skills of the Romans: houses, streets, squares, temples, a harbor, baths, and a sewer system. Continue the journey into the Middle Ages at Kamp Abbey. This is a former Cistercian abbey near Kamp-Lintfort. The church dates back to the 15th century. It is a joy to wander through the abbey's baroque terraced gardens. Look out for the four sundials, which show you the time measurements of antiquity and the Middle Ages, as well as the monastic prayer times and our modern time (probably the fastest of all). Jump to the time of industrialization and mining: visit the Duisburg Inner Harbor with its mix of old industrial buildings and contemporary architecture.
From your holiday apartment or house, it's just a stone's throw to the next castle or manor house. They offer perfect destinations for bike tours on beautiful days. The aforementioned and notable Moyland Castle in the district of Kleve is one of the most magnificent neo-Gothic buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia. The name comes from the Dutch and means "new land." Nearby is Schloss Wissen, also a moated castle. What's special about it is that it has been the residence of the von Loë family since the 17th century (to this day). Although privately owned, the castle courtyard can be visited. It is a popular destination for bike tours in the region. Other facilities include Schloss Dyck near Jüchen and the Renaissance Schloss Rheydt in Mönchengladbach, as well as Burg Linn, a moated castle in the Krefeld district of Linn. Every year on the Pentecost weekend, a medieval crafts market, the Flax Market, takes place in the park of the castle. With over 300 exhibitors, it is the largest medieval market in Germany. Medieval games, costumes for children, and music offer a varied accompanying program. Now simply rent a holiday accommodation, for example in Viersen, Kranenburg, in Mönchengladbach, or in the spa town of Xanten, or a cozy holiday apartment (FeWo) with a terrace, kitchen, and garden, and spend dreamy holidays with your loved ones according to your personal wishes in the surroundings of the Ruhr area.
The Lower Rhine is perfect for a family holiday. Many holiday apartments and houses are particularly family-friendly, offering ample space, Wi-Fi, and good transport connections to the region's excursion destinations. Many private accommodation landlords have pets themselves and warmly welcome your four-legged family members. A holiday with a dog means lots of fun for the little ones and plenty of exercise for the dog. Suitable excursion destinations for children include Wunderland Kalkar, the farm adventure oasis "Irrland" near Kevelaer, or the zoo and animal park Rees. Kilometers of trails in the Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park or at the Duisburg Six Lakes Plateau offer plenty of variety for extended hikes. Also consider a trip to the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer, to Heinsberg, or to the nearby Netherlands. Those who want to get closer to the Middle Ages can take a look at the partially preserved city fortifications in Rheinberg-Orsoy.
The Lower Rhine is a true region of culinary delights. The (culinary) season traditionally starts each spring with asparagus. Together with Münsterland, the Lower Rhine forms a mecca for lovers of the white (and green) noble vegetable. Around the same time and until St. John's Day on June 24, strawberries come into play. Both, strawberries and asparagus, can be bought directly from the producers on many farms. In the vicinity of your holiday apartment or your affordable private holiday home, you will definitely find restaurants and inns that introduce you to the various ways of preparing asparagus. A special recommendation in Neukirchen-Vluyn: In an inn dating back to 1771, the chef Roger Achterath celebrates asparagus with a hint of thyme and baked goat cheese in a potato crust. Another regional specialty, which leads a shadowy existence in the rest of the republic, is the goose egg. During the laying season from October to May, a goose lays between 40 and 60 eggs weighing about 200 grams each. The goose flocks live on meadows: these are definitely "happy eggs." Are you the chef at your own hearth? For dinner in your accommodation, you will find fresh ingredients from the region at the numerous weekly markets and in the farm shops of the farmers.
Accommodations here are conveniently located for exploring the museum landscapes in Düsseldorf and Duisburg. Especially lovers of modern and contemporary art will find their fill here. In the aforementioned Duisburg Inner Harbor, the notable Museum Küppersmühle is a highlight for art enthusiasts. The museum displays a top-notch collection of German modern art: Hanne Darboven, Georg Baselitz, Jörg Immendorff, Anselm Kiefer, Imi Knoebel, Gehard Richter, and many more. The Lehmbruck Museum presents a unique collection of modern sculptures. In the state capital Düsseldorf, attractions include the Museum Kunstpalast, the Kunstsammlung-Nordrhein Westfalen with artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, and the Kunsthalle of the Kunstverein with contemporary art. At Museum Schloss Moyland (a sight in itself) near Bedburg-Hau, you'll find the largest collection of works by the Lower Rhine artist Joseph Beuys. History enthusiasts will find an exhibition on Rhenish-Prussian history at the Prussian Museum Wesel. The museum is located in the former "Körnermagazin" of the Wesel Citadel. At the Lower Rhine Open Air Museum on the grounds of Dorenburg in Grefrarth, you can visit historical farm complexes, workshops, and farmers' gardens.
Where does the Lower Rhine start? Where does it end? The holiday region of the Lower Rhine is so diverse that a clear delineation is sometimes difficult. It extends from Düsseldorf and Duisburg (on the border with the Ruhr area) to Rees, Kleve, and Geldern in the west on the border with the Netherlands. Travel by car to your affordable holiday apartment or house north of the Rhine via highways 3 (Wesel, Emmerich, Voerde) and 31 on the border with Münsterland. To reach your accommodation on the left bank of the Rhine (south of the Rhine), take highways 57 (Klevelar, Goch) and 40 (Kempen, Wachtendonk). Especially during holiday periods and long weekends, there is a risk of traffic jams on the highways coming from the Rhineland and Ruhr area. Then, a comfortable journey by train is recommended. For those traveling from further away, it is worth checking the flight schedule of Weeze Airport. The former military airport has become a popular alternative to the major airports in Cologne and Düsseldorf over the past decades. Book a cozy holiday accommodation or an apartment (FeWo) with a kitchen, terrace, and garden according to your personal wishes, for example in Kranenburg, Viersen, or in the spa town of Xanten, and spend unforgettable holidays with your loved ones exploring the landscape and surroundings of your holiday destination.
