The cultural history of the region goes back many centuries. Start your journey through time at the Archaeological Park Xanten. Here, you can admire the urban construction skills of the Romans: houses, streets, squares, temples, a harbor, baths, and a sewer system. Continue the journey into the Middle Ages at Kamp Abbey. This is a former Cistercian abbey near Kamp-Lintfort. The church dates back to the 15th century. It is a joy to wander through the abbey's baroque terraced gardens. Look out for the four sundials, which show you the time measurements of antiquity and the Middle Ages, as well as the monastic prayer times and our modern time (probably the fastest of all). Jump to the time of industrialization and mining: visit the Duisburg Inner Harbor with its mix of old industrial buildings and contemporary architecture.

The aforementioned and notable Moyland Castle in the district of Kleve is one of the most magnificent neo-Gothic buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia. The name comes from the Dutch and means "new land." Nearby is Schloss Wissen, also a moated castle. What's special about it is that it has been the residence of the von Loë family since the 17th century (to this day). Although privately owned, the castle courtyard can be visited. It is a popular destination for bike tours in the region. Other facilities include Schloss Dyck near Jüchen and the Renaissance Schloss Rheydt in Mönchengladbach, as well as Burg Linn, a moated castle in the Krefeld district of Linn. Every year on the Pentecost weekend, a medieval crafts market, the Flax Market, takes place in the park of the castle. With over 300 exhibitors, it is the largest medieval market in Germany. Medieval games, costumes for children, and music offer a varied accompanying program. The Lower Rhine is a true region of culinary delights. The (culinary) season traditionally starts each spring with asparagus. Together with Münsterland, the Lower Rhine forms a mecca for lovers of the white (and green) noble vegetable. Around the same time and until St. John's Day on June 24, strawberries come into play. Both, strawberries and asparagus, can be bought directly from the producers on many farms. In the vicinity of your holiday apartment or your affordable private holiday home, you will definitely find restaurants and inns that introduce you to the various ways of preparing asparagus. A special recommendation in Neukirchen-Vluyn: In an inn dating back to 1771, the chef Roger Achterath celebrates asparagus with a hint of thyme and baked goat cheese in a potato crust. During the laying season from October to May, a goose lays between 40 and 60 eggs weighing about 200 grams each. The goose flocks live on meadows: these are definitely "happy eggs."
