Hiking Trails and Cultural History

Numerous churches and chapels have been well preserved over the years and centuries and can be visited in Matrei. This includes, for example, St. Alban Church, which was built at the end of the 18th century. The Gothic tower (68 meters high) even dates back to earlier buildings. The church is one of the largest country churches in Tyrol. A visit to the Church of St. Nikolaus is also worthwhile. Excavations uncovered, among other things, a predecessor building from the 7th century and a burial urn from the 2nd century. St. Nikolaus is considered an important art-historical sight and a highlight for a holiday with the family and own accommodation or apartment or holiday home. The atmosphere in the rock chapel, built in honor of the Heavenly Queen Maria, is impressive. However, the chapel was destroyed twice by avalanches. A delicately shaped figurine of the Mother of God originates from the old chapel. The current chapel was built in 1870 into a cave to better protect it. The Gletscherschaupfad Innergschlöß, which reveals the mysterious world of the glacier forefield, is interesting for the whole family. The starting point is the Matreier Tauernhaus at 1,511 meters above sea level. From there, it takes about 1.5 hours to get to Innergschlöß. The forest nature trail Zedlacher Paradies leads you through an up to 600-year-old mystical larch forest. The starting point is the parking lot above Zedlach. This enchanting walk takes about two hours. The local history museum with the mineral collection, the National Park House, and the Weißenstein Castle are also worth seeing. The place in East Tyrol attracts numerous bikers, mountaineers, or climbers every year. Horseback riding, fly fishing, white water rafting, or tennis are also available.
