Just about nine kilometers south of Andijk is Enkhuizen, with numerous buildings from the 15th to 17th centuries in the historic center around the harbor. North of Andijk is Medemblik. There, you can learn a lot about the history of the IJsselmeer at the Zuiderzeemuseum (Indoor and Outdoor Museum). Radboud Castle in Medemblik dates back to the 13th century. A bit further southwest on the Markermeer is the historic town of Hoorn. The seafarer Willem Cornelisz Schouten named Cape Horn after his hometown. In the center, there are numerous old buildings and churches. All these towns combine historical charm with maritime flair. Modern marinas alternate with historic city harbors, where trading ships and fishing boats have been mooring for hundreds of years. Today, the IJsselmeer is a stronghold of the sailing scene from all over Holland and neighboring countries. A special experience is a trip on the plump wooden ships of the Brown Fleet with their reddish-brown sails.
