I was pleased with how much space there was for our group. The separate sleeping areas gave everyone their own bit of privacy. Loved hanging out together on the porch.

What do you need to experience in Andijk?

Between historic old towns and chic marinas

Around the IJsselmeer, there are numerous historic towns with long trading and maritime histories, each worth a visit and offering plenty of attractions. Just about nine kilometers south of Andijk is Enkhuizen, with numerous buildings from the 15th to 17th centuries in the historic center around the harbor. From there, passenger ferries travel to Stavoren and Urk on the other side of the IJsselmeer. From Stavoren, you can visit the towns of Lemmer and Workum (don't forget your bicycles!). North of Andijk is Medemblik. There, you can learn a lot about the history of the IJsselmeer at the Zuiderzeemuseum (Indoor and Outdoor Museum). Radboud Castle in Medemblik dates back to the 13th century. A bit further southwest on the Markermeer is the historic town of Hoorn. The seafarer Willem Cornelisz Schouten named Cape Horn after his hometown. In the center, there are numerous old buildings and churches. All these towns combine historical charm with maritime flair. Modern marinas alternate with historic city harbors, where trading ships and fishing boats have been mooring for hundreds of years. Today, the IJsselmeer is a stronghold of the sailing scene from all over Holland and neighboring countries. A special experience is a trip on the plump wooden ships of the Brown Fleet with their reddish-brown sails.

What can you experience in Andijk with children?

On the water and on foot

Andijk is an insider tip for families who love water sports, as the area right outside your vacation home is particularly suitable for beginners. With knee-deep water, initial attempts on a surfboard or in a dinghy are straightforward, even if you fall into the water. Those who wish to spend their holiday with a dog in Andijk will find a fenced dog beach between Andijk and Onderdijk in the Koopmanspolder, where the four-legged family members can swim and frolic undisturbed. Not to be overlooked, of course, is cycling, the number one national sport in Holland. In Holland, you can hardly get by without cycling (unless you are on the water). The country is flat, and the well-maintained bike paths allow you to move quickly without much traffic, making it easy to visit the historic neighboring towns by bike.

Where can I eat out in Andijk?

From typical Dutch snacks to haute cuisine

Just a few years ago, the Netherlands was a blank spot on the gourmet map, but that has definitely changed. Near your private vacation apartment or house in Andijk, you'll find cafes, restaurants, and – quite literally – temples of gourmet cuisine, as one of the best restaurants in town (the "1619") welcomes its guests in a former church. Typical snacks to accompany beer include Bitterballen (stuffed croquettes) and Ossenworst, which can be found in local taverns and Eetcafés. You must not miss trying the Matjes. In May and June, you can enjoy fresh young herring, eaten raw – Dutch sushi. The best fish is recognized by its backbone not yet being red.

How do I come to Andijk?

The IJsselmeer so close...

The most convenient way to travel from Germany is by car, as there is no direct train connection. The route from Western Germany takes you via Amsterdam and Hoorn, reaching your accommodation in Andijk in about three and a half hours.
