Travel guide Portopetro
A quick trip to the island of Portopetro
The small harbour town of Portopetro (or alternatively spelled: Porto Petro) is located in the southeast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca in the sun-drenched region of Migjorn and belongs to the municipality of Santanyí. Portopetro is the quiet alternative to the larger neighbouring town of
Cala d'Or. Those who prefer a relaxing coastal vacation can book a reasonably priced villa, apartment or holiday home for rent. Hardly any other Mediterranean destination offers better flight connections than Mallorca. There are daily flights from Germany, Austria and Switzerland to the island capital
Palma de Mallorca. The flight time is about two hours. Numerous rental car agencies are available at the terminal. Advanced booking via the internet can save you time and money. Alternatively, there are bus connections to the centre of Palma and from there to all destinations. Book your holiday accommodation now or choose one of the villas or fincas with pool and air conditioning right by a beautiful sandy bay in an excellent location and enjoy a relaxing stay with your family. Your personal dream of an unforgettable and relaxing stay with your family will come true here!
Subtropical dream weather on the Mediterranean
Your private apartment, finca or affordable holiday home overlooking the harbour in Portopetro is located in the warmest landscape zone of Mallorca. The Migjorn is the warmest and driest region of the island. The landscape, apart from the coastal towns, is dominated by agriculture. Capers are mainly cultivated in the region around
Campos. The summer months here are hot and dry. Temperatures well above 30 °C are not uncommon. Beaches near your accommodation in Porto Petro, such as
Cala Santanyí or
Cala Llombards, offer a welcome cool-down. The water temperature rises to 25 °C in August – perfect for a
beach holiday in eastern Mallorca. For those not keen on beaches and sand, there is the option of a
holiday with a pool in eastern Mallorca or near the harbour. During the winter months, temperatures rarely drop below 10 °C. On warm days, you can enjoy t-shirt weather even in winter, although it gets noticeably cooler at night. Especially the time between late December and early February is known for the "little summers".
Enjoying Mallorca's culinary delights
It may take a little searching, but the effort is worth it. The typical Mallorcan cuisine, which is quite different from the cuisine of the Spanish mainland, still exists. Paella is not very representative of the Balearics. If you want to try a rice dish, then try Arròs Brut (dirty rice). This is a rice stew with various types of meat, usually pork, chicken and rabbit. Another island specialty is Frit Mallorquí. Small pieces of offal and vegetables are fried in a pan with lots of garlic and fennel. If you like a hearty breakfast, try Pa amb Oli ("Pambóli" pronounced): Unsalted Mallorcan brown bread is rubbed with tomatoes, drizzled with olive oil, seasoned with salt and topped with air-dried ham and/or cheese. Speaking of cheese: Mallorcan and Menorcan hard cheeses are exquisite. They are usually made from two to three different types of milk. The wine of the region goes perfectly with this. In recent decades, Mallorca's winemakers have consistently switched to quality wine production, which easily competes with the best wine-growing regions in Spain. You will find plenty of restaurants and bars around the historic harbour near your accommodation. Visit a restaurant not far from your finca with a swimming pool and take a stroll along the harbour.
On high mountains and in deep caves
Apart from the many hidden coves and the relaxing white sandy beach Platja des Trenc at Ses Salinas, the south and east of Mallorca offer some attractions worth visiting. Enjoy a perfect panoramic view of the landscape of the Serres de Llevant up to the island of Cabrera and up to Alcúdia on the east coast from the 509-meter high Puig Sant Salvador near Felanitx. The Santuari de Sant Salvador sits on top of the mountain. Enjoy a Cafe con Leche in a café with terrace. From the highest elevation of the region, you go to the deepest cave: The Coves del Drac, the Dragon Caves, are located north of Portopetro near Porto Cristo. The caves are famous for their underground lake, where classical music concerts are regularly held. The musicians play from various boats. The Parc natural de Mondragó is a nature reserve in the southeast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca, in the region of Migjorn. Definitely worth a visit! Book your holiday accommodation now, or one of the fincas or villas with pool and air conditioning in an excellent location to suit your personal needs for you and your family and visit sandy bays within easy reach.
