The initially inconspicuous town of Petra has a great past – at least its most famous son of the city: Brother Junípero Serra. The Franciscan missionary was, among other things, the founder of the city of San Francisco in California, USA. Other places like San Diego, Los Angeles, or Santa Barbara got their names from the Mallorcan padre. The church and the Museu Juniper Serra in Petra commemorate the Franciscan brother. Even if you reside in the hinterland of the island, a beach holiday in Petra is not an obstacle, as the most beautiful beaches of Mallorca are only a few minutes away by car. No longer a secret tip, but still less frequented in the off-season are the two beaches Cala Torta and Cala Mitjana in the east of the island near Artà. On the way back, it is worth making stops at the churches and castle complexes in Artà and Capdepera. The 14th-century fortification of Capdepera is the largest and best-preserved on the island. From there, it is not far to the tourist center of Cala Ratjada with several relaxing good beaches and numerous restaurants and bars. The Mallorcan wine deserves special mention, as its quality standards have steadily increased over the last decades. Today, the local wines are in no way inferior to the great wines of the mainland. They are even more interesting. This is because the autochthonous grapes of the island, such as Manto Negro, have their own character.
