The greatest attraction is the Spreewald landscape itself. In this extensive forest area, the river branches into countless tributaries, which are interconnected by just as many canals. This floodplain and moorland landscape is under strict nature conservation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Spree is navigable as a state waterway for more than 200 km in the Lower Spreewald and 45 km in the Upper Spreewald. The Sorbs have shaped the culture of the Spreewald for centuries. The history of this Slavic ethnic group is conveyed by the museum village Stary Lud in Dissen. The open-air museum in Lehde, with four historic farmhouses, tells of the agricultural tradition of the region.
The most beautiful experience in the Spreewald is a boat trip through the narrow arms of the Spree and the artificially created canals over the centuries. Silently, accompanied only by a gentle splashing, you glide through the landscape. The network of waterways is more than 1,500 kilometers long and runs through pastures, fields, wet meadows, forests, and moors. More than 800 butterfly species live here, 48 species of dragonflies, numerous fish, mammals, and almost 140 bird species. Night trips or winter boat trips with mulled wine are extraordinary. Wrapped in thick blankets and supplied with warm drinks, you travel through the snow-covered forests and meadows. Tip: Hats and thick socks keep you warm. Incidentally, until the mid-19th century, the boats were still made from a single tree trunk. The cuisine of the Spreewald is simple and seasonal. People eat what the fields, pastures, and of course, the many waterways provide. Two culinary delights have achieved regional fame – the Spreewald cucumber and Spreewald sauce. Theodor Fontane praised the famous green vegetable during his "Wanderings through the Mark Brandenburg" in the 1870s. The soils are moist and nutrient-rich, which is beneficial for the growth of cucumbers. The light Spreewald sauce is traditionally served with fish from the region, especially pike, eel, perch, or pikeperch. A Sorbian dish is potatoes with quark and linseed oil. In 1756, Frederick II of Prussia issued the "Potato Decree," making the tuber popular throughout the country. Linseed oil is pressed in numerous mills in the region. Along the waterways of the Spreewald, cozy excursion restaurants, quaint inns, and exclusive Michelin-starred restaurants (for example, in Burg) invite you to enjoy local delicacies. Beer enthusiasts should consider a trip to the small village of Schlepzig in the Lower Spreewald. There, the Spreewälder Privatbrauerei 1788 brews the finest beer specialties – all "handcrafted." The infamous Spreewald cucumbers also make an ideal souvenir for your loved ones back home.
Learn more about the Slavic settlement history of the Spreewald at the Slawenburg Raddusch. The complex consists of a faithfully reconstructed medieval fortification. The exhibition also displays finds from the Stone Age that have come to light during the mining of brown coal. During the holidays, there are special adventure tours for children with varying themes. Immerse yourself in the themes of castles, the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Germanic tribes. The exhibition spans a period of 12,000 years. Children can delve into earlier times in the castle courtyard with medieval toys made from materials such as wood, clay, or leather. Two more museums with a lot of local color are located at the Spree harbor in Burg and in Lübbenau. The Heimatstube Burg consists of a reconstructed typical three-sided courtyard with a gallery, and the Spreewald Museum in Lübbenau welcomes you to a typical village from around 1900. The city and regional museum in Lübben Castle transports you to the Renaissance era. On the castle island, there is an idyllically designed park with a water playground right on the Spree.
The historic cultural landscape of the Spreewald (in Lower Sorbian Błota for "the Swamps") is located in the southeast of Brandenburg near the federal capital Berlin.
