Super Hiking Vacation

We had a very nice stay at the holiday home in Finsterbergen in the Thuringian Forest. The house is well-equipped, clean, and cozy – everything was available that one needs for a relaxing vacation.
We were especially pleased that our dog was also warmly welcomed. Despite the rainy weather, we were able to take many beautiful hikes in the area and enjoy nature.
We felt completely comfortable and can gladly recommend the holiday home.

A very cozy and quietly furnished holiday accommodation with many beautiful excursion destinations and hiking opportunities (or just hanging out). Very kind and always reachable landlords. The welcome basket was especially nice. Dear Fam. Wagner, we will definitely come back and would like to thank you once again very much.

Quiet, beautiful vacation apartment

We had a very relaxing holiday in a lovingly furnished, bright vacation apartment. We slept great on the new mattresses. There were also reading lamps by the bed. In addition to a console and a small cabinet in the bathroom, there was also a cosmetic mirror. The kitchen was very well equipped (egg cooker, lemon press...). Our nice hosts gave us great tips for our stay. In Brotterode, there is a well-stocked Edeka, and the butchers and bakers are also recommended.

Brotterode is an ideal starting point for hikes without having to use the car.

We also highly recommend the Inselsbergbad with sauna.

All in all, a very relaxing stay and a holiday apartment that we would gladly recommend.

Which sights are there in Rennsteig?

Uniquely Idyllic Villages and Natural Beauties Along the Rennsteig

The Rennsteig is both the longest high-altitude hiking trail and one of the oldest long-distance hiking trails in Germany. Already in the 9th century, the trail was mentioned in documents as a connecting path for traders, pilgrims, and private travelers. It is no surprise that you will stumble upon many attractions along the well 169 km long hiking trail. If you settle into a cozy holiday home or a top-equipped vacation apartment in Eisenach, you will soon discover the "Wilde Sau," a stone cross from 1483 and the oldest marking of the Rennsteig. Schmiedefeld is located in the middle Rennsteig and offers you and your family pure relaxation in one of the many beautiful accommodations. It is an ideal starting point for hiking and skiing on the local mountain. Attractions in Schmiedefeld include traditional glassblowers, the mining museum with the visitor mine "Schwarze Crux," and of course the old Rennsteig train station. From here, you can take wonderful excursions with the whole family on the historic steam train. Look forward to a vacation apartment or holiday home in a quiet location in Tambach-Dietharz with its attractions like the old Tambach dam and the beautiful mountain lake Ebertswiese, which is a real insider tip. In Stützerbach in the middle Rennsteig, the Goethe House awaits you.

What do you need to experience in Rennsteig?

Rennsteig at a High Level: Hiking Between Churches, Biospheres, and Caves

The biggest highlight of this long hiking trail is its nature, which belongs to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and consists of 33,700 hectares of protected land area. Look forward to 84% forest as well as extensive raised bogs and the three high mountains of the Thuringian Forest: the Beerberg (982 m), Schneekopf (978 m), and Finsterberg (944 m). Hike through the beautiful valleys of Vessertal, Ilmtal, and Bibergrund and get to know the center of the biosphere reserve on stages 4 and 5 of the Rennsteig. In Oberhof, a botanical garden of a special kind awaits you. Here, more than 4,000 different plant species thrive, originating from mountain regions all over the world and feeling right at home in the local climate. Thuringia's only dripstone cave was discovered in 1888 in the Drachenschlucht near Ruhla and offers visitors a remarkable 3.50 m high pyramid of stalagmites and stalactites. To visit it, you must descend 48 m down 228 steps. Steinbach am Wald, located on your 7th stage of the Rennweg, has a small but highly interesting church to offer as a highlight. The fortified church of St. Johannes Baptista dates back to the 13th century and received its current appearance in the 15th century. The motte-and-bailey structure is unique and was originally completely surrounded by water.

What can you experience in Rennsteig with children?

Pure Relaxation: Your Vacation in an Idyllic Location for the Whole Family

Hiking on the Rennsteig is possible for the whole family all year round. Short stages can be easily managed by little hikers, and the well-developed hiking trails are also suitable for families with very small children. Family-friendly houses and affordable vacation apartments from private owners are ideal for short excursions or day trips without luggage into pristine nature. If you are considering a ski vacation on the Rennsteig with your family, you should definitely consider Oberhof, Thuringia's most famous winter sports resort. Here, you can go skiing and snowshoeing with your loved ones, which is as easy as walking itself. In Schmiedefeld, combine a winter holiday in an idyllic setting with particularly delicious culinary experiences for both adults and children.

Where can I eat out in Rennsteig?

Thuringian Forest: Dining Here Feels Like Home

The cuisine in Thuringia is diverse, delicious, and hearty. Meining is considered by many as the culinary birthplace of the Thuringian national dish: the dumplings. They are prepared differently depending on the region and are often enjoyed as a "Sunday meal" by many. Try the dumplings with plenty of sauce and pot roast. The potato can be called the second specialty of Thuringia without exaggeration. Be surprised by the variety of Thuringian potato preparations—and definitely try the fresh Thuringian potato cake. Try the authentic Thuringian sausage in one of the numerous local restaurants near your vacation apartment or holiday home. The real Thuringian is characterized by the spicy mix of beef, veal, and pork, loosely stuffed into pork intestines. Only then can the meat mixture, seasoned with caraway, pepper, salt, garlic, onion, and mustard, properly expand when grilled over charcoal.

What is a must-see in Rennsteig?

Rennsteig: Hiking with Great Variety

For sports enthusiasts and those interested in sports, there are plenty of events right on the Rennsteig. The Hiking WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP HIKEMarathon is certainly one of them. Every year, the historic Rennsteig train station between Schmiedefeld and Frauenwald invites you to a diverse cultural and event program, which includes nostalgic special trips for St. Nicholas or gourmet trips with the steam locomotive. In January, in Frauenwald, surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Thuringian Slate Mountains, you have the unique opportunity to witness a real dog sled race.

How do I come to Rennsteig?

Arriving Quickly to Your Relaxing Vacation on the Famous Rennsteig

You can easily reach your vacation apartment or holiday home on the Rennsteig or nearby by using the Deutsche Bahn or your own car. The Rennsteig runs centrally through the Thuringian Forest and the Thuringian Slate Mountains at an altitude of about 500 to 970 meters. It starts in Eisenach, in the district of Hörschel on the Werra, and ends after 169.29 km in Blankenstein on the Saale. You can reach the Rennsteig by private car via the A 71, A 73, and A 4 highways. Numerous exits lead you to federal roads that take you to your vacation apartment or affordable holiday home from private owners. If you have rented an apartment or house in the western Rennsteig, then take the A 4 and the federal road B 84 towards Eisenach. On the A 71, you will reach Oberhof. Neuhaus am Rennweg is accessible via both the A 4 and the A 73, and you can reach Blankenstein via the A 9, where you take the Rudolphstein exit and are then led to the country road to Blankenstein. Those who want to protect the environment and arrive relaxed in the western or middle Rennsteig can travel by train. For example, to Eisenach, which is an IC and ICE train station. Here, you get all connections to regional trains on the Eisenach – Bebra route. If you have rented your holiday home or apartment in Blankenstein, then travel by IC or ICE to Saalfeld and transfer there to the regional train to Blankenstein.
