The city of Pag, the island's capital, already existed in Roman times, which you should not miss. The Romans called it Pagus. In the early 16th century, a devastating plague epidemic broke out causing the city to be burned down and rebuilt near the old site. Some ruins and the small St. George Church have been preserved as a testimony to the old city of Pag. An annual procession leads from St. George's Church to the newer late Gothic Mary's Church. The remains of the old city wall in the style of the Gothic and Renaissance periods are worth seeing. The famous lacework of Pag is a popular souvenir from the island.
