The city of Pag, the island's capital, already existed in Roman times, which you should not miss. The Romans called it Pagus. In the early 16th century, a devastating plague epidemic broke out causing the city to be burned down and rebuilt near the old site. Some ruins and the small St. George Church have been preserved as a testimony to the old city of Pag. An annual procession leads from St. George's Church to the newer late Gothic Mary's Church.
