Dream holiday in dream house

We were allowed to be guests as a young family for 14 days in the dreamlike Casa Papaya 2. The planting and decoration of the terrace(s) and garden are a dream. Everything was thought of for our little one (1.5 years) (baby bath, beach toys, painting materials, cuddly toys, baby cot, door gate, ...). An ideal accommodation for children - and in combination with the other units of the finca also for multi-generational holidays. We didn't miss anything in the way of equipment, the kitchen is also very suitable for larger cooking events. Beautiful beaches and the capital as well as the west side of the island are easily accessible by rental car. Thank you Lucy for the hospitable welcome and your "taking care" of our well-being ;-)

Holiday flat with lots of charm in a beautiful location

We spent a very nice week from 14.03. - 21.03.23 as a couple at Finca Suculenta, house Papaya 1, in the hills of Brena Alta in the immediate vicinity of San Pedro. We had made a very good choice of both the holiday home and the holiday resort.

House Papaya1 is a beautiful, quiet, recently renovated and self-contained flat as part of Finca Suculenta with lots of charm and lovely planting around the house and on the terraces. From the house you have a wonderful view over the hills of Brena Alta as well as to the sea. The friendly and very helpful landlady had many tips and was always quickly accessible. A small supermarket nearby is within walking distance and it is only 2 km to San Pedro, the main town of the municipality of Brena Alta. The seaside resort of Los Cancajos with its quite beautiful beach can be reached in about 10 minutes by car (in good weather, as everywhere in La Palma, the few shady sunbathing spots become scarce; otherwise the beach was only pleasantly loosely frequented during our holiday period). Santa Cruz can also be reached quickly by car.

First of all, MANY THANKS to Lucy, Anyelo and Lolo ...... the cat! Hardly possible to take even better care of the guests! Thanks to the beautiful island and various web cams, I was able to hike almost daily in 16 weeks, which unfortunately meant that I actually used and enjoyed the great and extremely lavishly equipped accommodation far too little. Next time I will (maybe) change that ;-)

How is the weather in La Palma?

The pleasant weather on the Canary Islands promises an all-year-round spring, just like Madeira. This is ensured by trade winds and the warm Canary Current. Due to the almost 2,500-meter-high mountains on La Palma, there are several climate zones and weather conditions on the island. The trade wind clouds often hang on the pine-covered mountain slopes of Barlovento on the northeast side of the island. There, twice as much precipitation falls as in Tazacorte in the southwest. The average annual temperature is just over 20 °C with little variation between the seasons. La Palma is a year-round destination.

The Green Island offers pure nature

The biggest attraction of La Palma is the island's nature. The volcanic landscape is extraordinary and diverse. La Palma is the greenest of the Canary Islands, with more than 40 percent forest, and is therefore also called Isla Verde, the Green Island. On the almost 2,500-meter-high peak Roque de los Muchachos, snow lies in winter, while you can sit on the coast in a T-shirt in the sun. In the south lies the Cumbre Vieja with extensive lava and ash fields. UNESCO has declared La Palma both a Biosphere Reserve and a Starlight Reserve. Due to the low light pollution, numerous observatories and observatories are located on the summit, which lies above the trade wind cloud cover. In the center of the island lies the caldera Caldera de Taburiente. With a diameter of nine kilometers, it is the largest caldera in the world. Hike through deep gorges (Barrancos), through streams and under waterfalls, over crater rims and through deep forests.

La Palma - One of the most beautiful old towns in the Canary Islands

The island's capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, has one of the most beautiful contiguous old town centers of all the Canary Islands. Typical of the spectacular architecture of the islands are the wooden balconies with flower decorations. The most beautiful ones are located on the Avenida Maritima. The town hall on Plaza de Espana in the Spanish Renaissance style dates back to the 16th century. The wooden coffered ceilings and wall paintings inside are worth seeing. The two churches Iglesia Santo Domingo and Iglesia de San Francisco also date from this time. On the edge of the old town is a replica of the Santa Maria (Barco de la Virgen), with which Christopher Columbus set off for the New World. Inside is the city's maritime museum. Other interesting museums are located in Los Llanos de Aridane (Museo Arqueológico Benahorita, Archaeological Museum) and in Tazacorte (Museo del Platano, Banana Museum).

Where can I eat out in La Palma?

Papas and Mojo always fit – The typical island cuisine

The unique cuisine on the Canary Islands differs from that of the mainland due to its history and location. Until the middle of the last century, the Palmeros were dependent on what the fields, gardens, and the Atlantic Ocean provided. These were potatoes (which came from the New World to the Canary Islands), fruits and vegetables, Gofio (a flour roasted before grinding), pork and goat meat, as well as fish and seafood. The typical side dishes for many dishes are Papas Arrugadas (salty wrinkled potatoes) with Mojo (a green or red spicy sauce). Also, try the outstanding goat cheese of the island and the wine, which has its own character due to the volcanic soils of the Teneguía near Fuencaliente. Visit the lush weekly market in El Paso with a wide selection of regionally produced products. An exciting overview of the original island cuisine and its ingredients is provided by "My Island Cookbook" by mushroom expert and adopted Palmera Rose Marie Dähncke. Families with children will find what they are looking for in the southwest of the island. The best place for a beach holiday in La Palma is Tazacorte. The spacious beach of black volcanic sand offers plenty of space and is not overcrowded even in the main season. In total, however, there are only a few beaches on La Palma compared to the eastern Canary Islands. Those who also want to jump into the cool water in their own holiday home can book a holiday with a pool in La Palma. From the marina in Tazacorte, you can take whale watching trips as well as diving and sailing excursions. Above the village is the viewpoint El Time, which offers an incomparable panoramic view of the coast and the Atlantic Ocean at 700 meters above sea level. Daring people jump down from here with paragliders. Another family-friendly beach is located a little further south at Puerto Naos. The primeval forest on La Palma, or the laurel forest Los Tilos, is a true explosion of biological diversity and lush greenery. Two major events determine the cultural annual cycle of the Palmeros. The largest festival on the island is the Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves. The procession dates back to the 17th century and takes place only every five years. The whole island gathers to carry the Holy Virgin of the Snow from the pilgrimage church down to Santa Cruz to pray for rain and a good harvest. Every year on Carnival Monday, the festival Los Indianos is celebrated in the capital. This mocks the emigrants who returned from the New World (Las Indias).
