Among the most popular destinations in Saxon Switzerland are the numerous castles in the region, which are among the most impressive mountain fortresses in Europe. Of the right-bank castles, Hohnstein Castle is the best preserved. The oldest parts date back to the 12th century. Hohnstein Castle is also known for the Hohnsteiner Kasper puppet stage. Perched above the Elbe Valley in the Bastei rocks near Rathen in the Saxon Switzerland National Park is the ruin of Neurathen Rock Castle, the largest medieval rock castle in Saxon Switzerland. Also dating from the 12th century is Stolpen Castle, which has been transformed from a castle to a palace and fortress over its history. The Königstein Fortress, located above your private vacation apartment or holiday home, is one of the largest mountain fortresses in Europe and is a top attraction and one of the most visited destinations in the region. Königstein Fortress was first mentioned in documents in 1233. From the top, you can enjoy a fantastic view over Königstein, the Elbe, and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Saxon Switzerland.
One of the most beautiful sights in all of Saxon Switzerland is the Bastei rock formation, which towers high above the Elbe. The Bastei is a historic excursion destination. As early as 1812, the first simple refreshment huts, known as "bark huts," were built a little back from the viewpoint of the Bastei. A few years later, the first inn was established. In 1851, the former wooden bridge at the Bastei was replaced by the stone bridge that is now protected as a "Technical Monument." On the eastern side of the bridge is the "Neurathen Rock Gate" and Neurathen Rock Castle. The famous Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich was fascinated by the landscape and immortalized the Bastei in many of his works, although he omitted the then wooden bridge in his paintings. Friedrich also painted numerous rock formations along the Painter's Path in Saxon Switzerland, such as the standalone Lilienstein. Further hiking trails lead through the Kirnitzsch Valley, around Rathen, and to the Lichtenhain Waterfall. From there, the Kirnitzsch Valley Railway takes you back through the national park to Bad Schandau.
The Saxon Switzerland region is particularly family-friendly. Find holiday homes and apartments with gardens, where the whole family has plenty of space during your family vacation in Königstein – including your dog. Pets are allowed in many houses, making it a perfect holiday destination for a vacation with your dog in Königstein. The town is an ideal starting point for excursions and hikes in nature. In 2009, the Painter's Path was voted the most popular hiking trail in Germany. The vast forests around Königstein continue on the Czech side in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park. On rainy days, relax and have fun with the family at the Toskana Therme. From your vacation apartment or holiday home in Königstein, you can reach the Toskana Therme in just 30 minutes by car or public transport. Splashing and playing in the pool for the little ones and relaxing in the sauna – that's how easy it is to enjoy your vacation. For variety, there's also the Elbe Leisure Land and a climbing forest near your vacation rental. Advanced climbers take on the challenges of the bizarre rock formations in the Saxon Switzerland National Park at excellent climbing spots.
The district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains stretches from Dresden to the Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland. It is not surprising, then, that the traditions of many regional cuisines blend here. In Saxon cuisine, influences from Saxony, the Czech Republic, and Poland come together: stuffed cabbage, Saxon-style pot roast, bacon dip, and salt crust roast are among the meat dishes. Saxon trout dominates among the fish. In soups, you'll find barley soup with Kassler and elderberry soup in the summer on restaurant menus. In excursion restaurants, curd cake and crumble cake are staples on every menu. And Saxony also has much to offer in terms of beverages: famous beer varieties come from Radeberg and Wernesgrün, and quality wines are produced along the Saxon Wine Route near Meißen. By the way: At farmers' and weekly markets, as well as in farm shops, you can find regional products if you want to cook in your own vacation apartment or affordable holiday home. The weekly market in Königstein takes place every Wednesday and Saturday morning.
At the Bastei, the "Swiss House" information center of the Saxon Switzerland National Park houses an exhibition showcasing the views of numerous artists on the Elbe Sandstone Mountains through paintings, graphics, and sketches from various epochs. Artists Caspar David Friedrich and Adrian Zingg have made the Elbe Sandstone Mountains famous with their paintings. The Painter's Path, a long-distance hiking trail named after these great artists, leads hikers along the most picturesque paths through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and Saxon Switzerland. Artists still set up their easels along the sights and let nature inspire them. The Rathen Rock Stage, a natural amphitheater near the spa town of Rathen in Saxon Switzerland, has been in existence since 1936. During the summer months, it hosts numerous events from theater to dance and musical theater to concerts. Children also enjoy their time here, for instance, at performances of Winnetou and Hansel and Gretel. Karl May plays have traditionally been performed at the Rathen Rock Stage since its inception, attracting thousands of visitors to the spa town of Rathen every year.
