Travel guide Heiterwang
Travel to the Tyrolean Alps with the Außerfernbahn
Heiterwang is located in the
Außerfern region in the Austrian state of Tyrol. The Außerfernbahn takes you comfortably from Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Lermoos and
Bichlbach to Heiterwang-Plansee train station. By car, you can reach your private vacation rental in Heiterwang from Munich via the Fernpass (B 179) via Lermoos in the direction of Reutte. The
Innsbruck airport is about an hour's drive away.
The best time to travel is all year round
In the Außerfern region, summers are mild and wet, and winters are icy cold. Heiterwang is located at an altitude of almost 1,000 meters above sea level. During the high season in summer, temperatures rise to an average of 21 °C. The water temperature in Lake Heiterwanger rises to 20 °C in July and August. In winter, the mercury drops significantly below freezing. The best time for a
ski vacation in Heiterwang is between early December and April. The snowiest months are January and February.
Hearty Alpine cuisine with dumplings, Spatzen, and Marende
Tyrol is a true gourmet paradise - as long as it's hearty and down-to-earth. The most traditional meals can be found in the good old-fashioned Tyrolean inns and mountain huts. The classic on the menus are dumplings - either in a clear broth or with sauerkraut and salad. Variations include bacon dumplings and cheese dumplings with gray or mountain cheese. Gröstl was originally the leftovers of the Sunday roast: fried potatoes with leftover pieces of beef or pork and onions are cooked together in a pan. Schlutz or Schlipfkrapfen are dough pockets with a hearty potato filling. Melted butter and chives are added to the plate. For a snack during a hike, the Tyrolean snack, called Marende, is suitable. Fresh farmer's bread with bacon, cheese, sausages, leftovers from the roast, lard, and horseradish (spicy!) is served. Kaiserschmarrn is not originally from Tyrol, but it should not be missing from any menu either. To quench your thirst, try one of the home-brewed beers from Austria's highest brewery in the neighboring village of Rinnen near Berwang.
Crystal clear mountain lakes and wintry white
The surroundings of your vacation home in Heiterwang offer three crystal-clear mountain lakes - Heiterwanger See, Blindsee, and Plansee - which are suitable for numerous water activities such as swimming, boating, stand-up paddling, fishing, or even diving. Blindsee offers underwater visibility of up to 30 meters. Many kilometers of hiking trails, bike paths, and Nordic walking routes run around the lakes. Spend your
vacation with your dog in Heiterwang and enjoy the pristine mountain landscape of the Alps. The climbing forest at the Bichlbach Sports & Leisure Park offers five exciting courses with 60 climbing elements. Here, children can test their courage in an alpine high ropes course. Even more action awaits during canyoning or gorge hiking. In narrow canyons, you'll climb, jump, abseil, and dive into the cool waters of the mountain rivers. In winter, the Tyrolean
Zugspitz-Arena transforms into a winter sports paradise. Then, explore the frozen lakes with snowshoes and cross-country skis on well-marked trails between the Wetterstein massif, Sonnenspitze, Grubigstein, and the towering Zugspitze. The Karlift takes you to Heiterwang's local mountain with two family-friendly slopes. Snowboarders can enjoy the snow parks and freeride routes in the Zugspitz-Arena.
Breathtaking views - Fascination of the mountain world
Around your vacation accommodation, there is plenty to see in addition to the breathtaking nature, which alone is a sufficient reason for a vacation in Heiterwang. A gem is the parish church of Our Lady, which dates back to the 14th century in its origins. The church received its current baroque appearance and furnishings in the 18th century. If you want to learn more about the cultural history of the region, a visit to the "Fascination Zugspitze" experience world is highly recommended. Learn about the construction of the first cable car on the mountain, watch 3D presentations, and walk on a glass floor with a view into the depths. The Tuftl Alm viewing platform at almost 1,500 meters above sea level offers another magnificent view of the mountain world and the Lermoos basin.
