Particularly worth seeing is the Eidersperrwerk – it separates the Eider from the North Sea and protects it from storm surges. Also visit the Westerheversand Lighthouse, the widely visible landmark of the peninsula. You can take a small journey into the past at Haus Peters: a real historical merchant's shop and museum in Tetenbüll. Garden lovers appreciate the Hochdorfer Garten near Tating. In spring, historic apple varieties bloom in the Baroque garden established in 1764. But the real "sights" are the wonderful, long, and well-maintained sandy beaches of the North Sea on the Eiderstedt Peninsula - simply perfect for beach vacations. On sunny days, you might just want to stroll from the privately rented apartment in Sankt-Peter Ording towards the sea and enjoy the North Sea air in a beach chair. Your dog can also choose from various dog-friendly beaches. Be sure to also check out the stilt houses along the beach of Sankt Peter Ording. They are the landmarks of the North Sea spa town in North Frisia and are among Northern Germany's most famous attractions. The first stilt house in Sankt Peter-Ording was opened in 1911, and today there are several of these somewhat peculiar buildings. Their uses could not be more different – the six largest stilt houses contain restaurants, while others are used as houses or lifeguard stations.
You must visit the Multimar Wattforum in Tönning. Here, you can look into the mouth of a catshark, follow a lugworm into its burrow, watch jellyfish float, and play dike master: build your dike to protect the hinterland from floods. The Multimar Wattforum is unique on the North Sea coast and much more than a museum. The aquariums can be experienced like a cinema: the panoramic window of the largest of the 30 aquariums measures 36m². On Mondays and Fridays at 3 PM, you can watch a diver feed the fish. The star of the Wattforum is a 45-ton sperm whale, stranded in 1997 off the Danish island of Rømø. Its 18 m long skeleton hangs from wire ropes under the ceiling in the specially built whale house. The Multimar is at most 20 minutes away from your vacation apartment on the Eiderstedt Peninsula. Children love the "Lina-Hähnle-Haus" Nature Center in Kating. It is idyllically hidden on the old Eiderdeich in the Katinger Watt. The exhibition provides information about the animals and plants in the Eider estuary nature reserves, the history of the Eider, and the Wadden Sea National Park. The quaint garden with a tactile path and scent beds invites you to linger. Take your children on a journey through time to the formation history of the Katinger Watt, with the help of photos, binoculars, specimens, dioramas, films, and conversations. In addition to the educational garden with herb, marsh, and salt marsh beds, the garden of the center also offers many relaxing spots for picnicking.
On the Eiderstedt Peninsula, there are a variety of different beaches where you can enjoy the North Sea. The most famous beaches are in Sankt Peter and Ording. Those seeking peace and space will find it in Böhl. Böhler Beach is directly adjacent to the breeding and resting areas of many birds. Those who prefer green beaches will love the Eiderdeich, directly opposite the Tönning outdoor pool. In addition to a bathing jetty, a playground, and a volleyball court, there is an area for bathing guests with dogs. On the Eiderstedt Peninsula, your four-legged friend is welcome in almost every affordable vacation apartment. The area is perfect for your vacation with a dog, as you can take extensive walks directly by the North Sea. Eiderstedt offers beautiful, signposted beaches for dogs at the bathing resorts of Vollerwiek (Süderdeich), Augustenkoog, Garding, Kirchspiel-Garding, Grothusenkoog, Katharinenheerd, Osterhever, Poppenbüll, and Welt. If the weather or the season does not allow for a beach day at Eiderstedt, the Dünentherme in Sankt Peter-Ording is the alternative for all water rats and wellness fans. For sauna enthusiasts, the Dünentherme offers 5 saunas in addition to the water landscape. From the 50 °C warm Sanarium to the stilt sauna, where you can watch the sunset over the sea by the crackling fireplace in the evening, there is something for every taste.
The North Sea offers a pronounced culinary diversity. In Eiderstedt, you will surely fall in love with North German cuisine. It offers numerous delights, from shrimp to all kinds of North Sea fish, Labskaus, and salt marsh lamb. The restaurants mostly use regional products of the season. If you plan not to cook yourself during your vacation in the apartment or house, a tour through the numerous restaurants in Eiderstedt is recommended. Afterwards, to round off a beautiful vacation day, the bars invite you for a cocktail on the beach, where you can experience the wonderful sunset. There's no better way to end a relaxing vacation day. In your vacation apartment, you can start the next day well-rested.
Art enthusiasts will love the House for Art and Culture in Eiderstedt. Various artists from the KunstKlima group exhibit several times a year in the Old Town Hall in Garding. In the numerous galleries on the North Sea peninsula, you can watch the artists at work. The beauty of the landscape has always inspired creative minds. The results of their work are presented in exhibitions and vernissages. Check the event calendar for St. Peter-Ording and Eiderstedt for current dates. The Eiderstedt Peninsula has a turbulent past, which can be experienced and learned about in numerous museums in Sankt Peter-Ording, Garding, Tetenbüll, and Friedrichstadt. The exhibitions offer hands-on contemporary history. Rainy weather? Leave your vacation apartment and explore the Eiderstedt museums. At a point between Garding and Welt, you can even see five church spires on a clear day. During the summer months, you can enter each of the churches during the day to admire the historical architecture and church art.
