Those who book an affordable holiday apartment privately or a holiday home with a view of the water in Dranske will be delighted by the picturesque location between the Wieker Bodden and the Baltic Sea. Like all its neighboring towns, Dranske is an old Slavic settlement founded by Prince Wizlaw II at the end of the 14th century. The slightly Germanized place name derives from the Slavic "Dranzky" or "Dornik," meaning "stick" or "roof batten." Those interested in the history of the place and the Bug peninsula should definitely visit the Marine Historical and Local Museum Dranske/Bug. Although the place is a former fishing village, it looks back on a 75-year military history. Since the naval base was decommissioned in 1991, many unsightly buildings from that era have been demolished, so the town's appearance has become more original again. The Kuhle district at the northern tip of the Bodden has a very special attraction for you. There stands the old house "Der Schifferkrug," the oldest existing inn on Rügen! Its existence has been documented since 1455 and is definitely worth a visit. In the Lancken district, an interesting art and cultural historical attraction awaits you, which you should definitely visit. It is the early Baroque manor house "Gutshaus Lancken." It is located in the Baroque park laid out between 1720-1730 and was inhabited by the von der Lancken family from 1608 to 1878. Since 1963, the manor house has been vacant. The overgrown park and estate is a particularly romantic destination for a bicycle tour, where you will surely find a nice picnic spot.
Do not miss the legendary Cape Arkona in the north of the Wittow Peninsula. At Cape Arkona, you will find, among other things, Jaromarsburg, a Slavic settlement from the 7th century, which was destroyed by the Danes in the 12th century. Other attractions at Cape Arkona include the Peilturm, two lighthouses from the 19th and 20th centuries, and the fog station. For many visitors, however, the cliffs of the cape with their chalk cliffs are the most famous attraction of the region – if not of all Rügen. The chalk cliffs are a beautiful destination with panoramic views of the sea, accessible via hiking trails. The nearby fishing village of Vitt is one of the most beautiful places on Rügen and delights with its old, thatched-roof houses and their old charm. Those interested in art history should visit Altenkirchen with the church built around 1200. The megalithic tombs in Nobbin wonderfully complement your excursion into the Slavic history of the peninsula. If you want to take an unforgettable boat trip, you should definitely head to the island of Hiddensee, just a stone's throw from your holiday apartment or house in Dranske.
Dranske and its surroundings are perfect for a relaxing holiday with children, who can splash around to their heart's content on the gently sloping sandy beach. Many family-friendly accommodations, such as in Jasmund, offer everything you and your family need: garden, terrace, balcony, barbecue facilities, and, so you don't fall completely out of touch, also Wi-Fi. Exciting excursions start right outside the door of your holiday home directly on the water with Wi-Fi or your holiday apartment: Surprise your loved ones every day with a new suggestion for hiking, walking, or cycling. Discover historical sites and quaint pubs or take surfing lessons on-site, as the Wittow peninsula is famous for its surf spots. And should the weather turn really unpleasant, then your cozy accommodation will certainly have the right program with board games, fondue, or even a nice movie from the private DVD collection or via Wi-Fi. The kilometer-long fine beach at the Bakenberg holiday village is perfect for long walks and letting the kids romp in the Baltic Sea. Here you experience the optimal beach holiday in a private residence or holiday apartment directly on the Baltic Sea. How about a cozy bike ride with rented bikes to Glowe, Juliusruh, or Breege? The high shore path in Jasmund is also ideal for this. Or will it be a pure beach holiday full of relaxation on the Baltic Sea beach?
What would an island be without its fish specialties! The Baltic Sea and the waters of the Bodden offer a special variety of fish such as pike-perch, pike, eel, and of course herring, which is offered freshly fried or pickled. Quality products from Rügen are certified meat products and fish that focus on sustainability in fishing methods and animal husbandry. Look out for the corresponding offers for the sake of fish stocks and your health. Island-owned farms deliver lamb, pork, and game products of special quality, and the cheese specialties from Rügen should not be missing from the breakfast table of your holiday apartment. Genuine specialties of the island include sweet and sour meat stews with plums and raisins or the pork back filled with braised meat, prunes, and minced meat, as well as the Baltic cod "larded" with bacon. The "Rügen eel soup" is famous, and if it's not to your taste, you will certainly not say no to the even more famous red berry pudding. Then digest with a leisurely walk back to the community to your personal holiday accommodation with a sea view near the Baltic Sea beach.
Dranske and its surroundings guarantee you a relaxing holiday away from the noise of the city or the hustle and bustle of other tourist destinations. Your holiday apartment or the holiday home close to the beach offers you wonderful views of the Bodden landscape of the peninsula, known for its nature. Nature lovers are particularly well catered for here, as the island has the most beautiful areas of Rügen. Here you breathe healthy Baltic Sea air and hike in the neighboring Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. The national park, with an area of 6 km², is the largest in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the third largest in Germany. Guided hikes are offered in the Südburg park area from March to October by the Dranske Tourist Office. On the last weekend in July, there is a three-day Bodden party with everything that goes with it. There is surfing for the "Windland Cup" and extensive celebrations on the beach.
By car, you can reach Dranske on Rügen from Berlin via the A 24 motorway. You initially head towards Hamburg and from the Wittstock/Dosse motorway junction, take the A 19 to Rostock. Here, switch to the A 20 towards Stralsund. From the Stralsund exit, continue on the B 96 federal road towards Sassnitz. Turn left at Sagard towards Altenkirchen and then follow the signs to Dranske. If traveling via Hamburg, take the A 1 motorway to Lübeck until the exit to Stettin on the A 20. Follow the motorway to the Stralsund exit, where you switch to the B 96 towards Sassnitz. Continue as described above. The Deutsche Bundesbahn takes you to Bergen, Lietzow, Sagard, and Sassnitz on Rügen. From there, you need to switch to RPNV buses, which will take you on lines 12 and 13 to your destination. A beautiful alternative is the ferry connections to Rügen. Scandlines and the ports in Sassnitz and Rostock offer ferries that connect Rügen with Scandinavian, Polish, and Russian ports.
