The Hermannsdenkmal, inaugurated in 1875 near Detmold, is certainly the most visited excursion destination in the Teutoburg Forest, but by no means the only attraction in the region's woods. The monument stands on the 386m high Grotenburg in Hiddesen near Detmold. Hermann the Cheruscan prevented further advances of the Roman legions in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. Also located on a prominent hill is the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument. It forms the "Gateway to Westphalia," the Porta Westfalica. In the surrounding area, numerous hiking and walking trails invite you to explore the woods. At Horn-Bad Meinberg on the edge of the Teutoburg Forest, nature has created a special attraction: the Externsteine. Fifteen jagged chalk sandstone rocks rise into the sky like Stonehenge. Some attractions are conveniently located right outside your private holiday home or apartment. The many historic city centers fascinate with their half-timbered and patrician houses in the style of the Weser Renaissance. A visit to the Trinity Monastery of the "Pink Sisters" in Bad Driburg is worthwhile. Although the monastery is relatively young, it is lavishly equipped. A real highlight among the monastic buildings of the region is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Corvey near Höxter. The former imperial abbey was elevated to a prince-bishopric and later, at the beginning of the 19th century, to a principality, whose lands extended far into the country. Today, the complex, which is one of the most popular attractions in the region, hosts events such as the Corvey Music Weeks. The cemetery here is the burial site of Hoffmann von Fallersleben, who wrote the "Song of the Germans," which later became the national anthem. Be sure to also visit Schwalenberg Castle or take bike tours through the Weser Uplands on dreamlike cycling paths. You can also tackle a section of the Hermannsweg, a long-distance hiking trail over 170 km, or visit Hameln.
The health resorts in Germany have been experiencing a real comeback in recent years. With seven health resorts, the Teutoburg Forest is a TOP destination when it comes to your health and well-being. The range of services includes curative treatments, prevention packages, and wellness packages in moor and mineral spas. Rent a vacation apartment or a private holiday home in one of the healing places: Bad Driburg, Bad Lippspringe, Bad Oeynhausen, Bad Meinberg, Bad Salzuflen, Bad Wünnenberg, or Bad Holzhausen. In addition to these seven places, there is also the Kneipp spa town of Schieder with Lake Schieder. The lake is located in the middle of a local recreation area with cycling, hiking, and water sports opportunities. Rent a cozy vacation accommodation or an apartment with a balcony, garden, and sauna now, and visit numerous excursion destinations in the surrounding area between farms and forests.
The area around the Teutoburg Forest is particularly suitable for excursions with children and dogs. You will find numerous excursion destinations and plenty of family-friendly and cozy accommodations. Many private landlords have pets themselves, so your four-legged family members are welcome in the house. Nothing stands in the way of a vacation with a dog in the Teutoburg Forest. And entertainment for children is also provided: Schieder-Schwalenberg has a leisure and adventure park right by the lake, where your little ones will have a great time. At the Adlerwarte Berlebeck, you can experience the fantastic world of birds of prey. The warte is the most species-rich bird of prey observatory in Europe. It was opened in 1939. The twelve large aviaries are lovingly designed and provide the birds with a species-appropriate environment. In free-flight programs, you can see the kings of the air in their element. At the same time, the falconers provide interesting background information about the animals and their taming. The Extertal is an attractive area bordered by forests and meadows, romantic side valleys, and hiking trails. The impressive natural and cultural monument Externsteine is one of the most famous and popular excursion destinations in the Teutoburg Forest. Perfect for outings with the family!
Around the year 1500, an artist, now unknown, created the magnificent church window of the Wiesenkirche in Soest. It depicts the so-called "Westphalian Last Supper." Instead of unleavened bread and wine, it features specialties of East Westphalian cuisine: ham, a pig's head, beer mugs, schnapps glasses, and Westphalian bread. There is another version of the Westphalian Last Supper carved in wood: it features green kernel soup and suckling pig. The cuisine in the Teutoburg Forest is mostly hearty and rich. However, the culinary landscape is diverse. In the vicinity of your vacation apartment or holiday home, you will find a wide selection of simple eateries and exquisite restaurants. The latter reinterpret the cuisine of East Westphalia in their own way, just as the unknown artist of the Last Supper did 500 years ago. Pumpernickel, a durable black bread, has gained international popularity. If you want to wield the cooking spoon in your own accommodation, local butchers, markets, and farm shops offer a wide selection of regional products. The favorite drink with meals for Westphalians is a "lecker Pils." There are numerous breweries throughout the region.
Sacred art is displayed at the Archdiocesan Diocesan Museum in Paderborn. The building was designed by the Cologne architect Gottfried Böhm. It houses an outstanding collection of sculptures and one of the oldest depictions of a enthroned Madonna from the 11th century. In contrast, the Heinz Nixdorf Museum is ultra-modern. It is the world's largest computer museum. For children, touching is allowed! Embark on a journey into the history of the area at the Varusschlacht Museum in the Osnabrück region. It has been more than two millennia since Germans and Romans faced each other. The museum is located at the site of the event at Kalkriese. Many smaller and larger museums dedicated to history, culture, and art near your vacation home or apartment in the Teutoburg Forest make your holiday a true cultural experience. For example, the Museum Schloss Bad Pyrmont shows contemporary artists' works and regular special exhibitions under the motto "New Art in the Old Castle."
The Teutoburg Forest is primarily located in North Rhine-Westphalia in East Westphalia-Lippe. The most convenient way to reach your vacation apartment or holiday home is by train. Regular IC and ICE trains from Hannover and Berlin, as well as from the Rhineland and Ruhr area, stop in the cities of Gütersloh, Bielefeld, Herford, and Minden. There are also direct connections from Kassel and Chemnitz to Paderborn. By car, you can reach the Teutoburg Forest and the cities of the region via the A2, A30, and A33 highways. The A2 connects Oberhausen and Dortmund from the west, and Hannover and Berlin from the east, with Bielefeld, Porta Westfalica, and Bad Salzuflen. The A30 provides access to Bad Oeynhausen from Amsterdam and Osnabrück. The A33 connects several cities here: Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock, Paderborn, and Bad Lippspringe. For those traveling from further away, Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport is an option. Public transportation is available from the airport, and car rental stations are located at the terminal. Additionally, the Teutoburg Forest can also be accessed by water: via the Weser River and the Mittelland Canal to the waterway junction in Minden. Book a cozy vacation accommodation or an apartment with a sauna, garden, and balcony now, and take trips to see the attractions. Your relaxing holiday can begin!
