A borgo was a fortified village outside the big cities in the Middle Ages. The rocca, the castle of the Aldobrandeschi in Scarlino, was documented as early as 1108. From the historic village center, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Maremma landscape up to the coast and the islands of Elba and Corsica. Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, with a monument to the famous guerrilla fighter of the Italian unification movement, forms the center of Scarlino. The main church Chiesa di San Donato with a convent from the 12th century is located in the town center. The Oratorio della Santa Croce (also in the historic center) dates back to the 13th century. A highlight takes place every year on August 19, when historical scenes with medieval costumes are reenacted during a parade and theater performance. Numerous sights between the romantic alleys of the dreamy old town await your visit. A special feature is the use of unsalted bread Pane Sciocco, which means "stupid bread." The tradition comes from the Middle Ages when Pisa no longer supplied salt. Pane Sciocco is the basis for bruschetta and fettunta – toasted bread slices with olive oil and garlic. Let's take a look at the menus. The boundaries between ristorante, trattoria, osteria, pizzeria, rosticceria, and enoteca blur. Arista alla fiorentina is a roast pork with lots of garlic and rosemary. Calf tripe with tomato sauce (a la fiorentina) is also widespread, as is the Bistecca alla fiorentina made from the meat of the white Chianina cattle from the Chiana Valley. On the coast of the province, you should try Cacciucco alla livornese, a thick fish stew with various fish and seafood. The chapter on wine must not go unmentioned. With every local house wine in the restaurants, there is hardly anything wrong. However, Tuscany offers some of the best wines in the country: Chianti, Brunello, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are worth mentioning – all made from the Sangiovese grape. In recent decades, Maremma has attracted attention with some "Super Tuscans" made from international grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The small town of Scarlino near the dreamy sea is located in the southern Tuscany in the heart of Maremma, about 100 kilometers southwest of Florence.
