The history of Zadar goes back far into pre-Roman times. The city grew with the Romans and became magnificent during the time of Venetian rule. The Venetian defense system of the 15th to 17th centuries has recently been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Stroll through the narrow streets of the old town, where tourism began in 1902 with the opening of the first hotel. The winged lion of St. Mark, the symbol of the Republic of Venice, can be seen everywhere. At the harbor, the sea organ created by artist Nikola Bašić is worth seeing, or rather hearing. The waves press the water into the organ pipes, creating an airflow. Along the coast on the mainland, on the many islands and peninsulas, numerous beaches invite you to sunbathe and swim. In the off-season, you have many beaches and hiking trails all to yourself – ideal for a holiday with your dog in Dalmatia.
