The Four-Gate City of Neubrandenburg
Your vacation rental in Neubrandenburg is located in a city known for having the best-preserved medieval fortification of brick Gothic architecture in Europe. The landmarks and most famous attractions of Neubrandenburg are the four imposing city gates within the historic city walls. The New Gate of Neubrandenburg is the youngest among them, dating back to the 14th century. The Friedländer Gate is the best-preserved, while the Treptower Gate, at nearly 32 meters, is the tallest. Inside the latter is the Regional Museum Neubrandenburg. The museum features an exhibition on the city's history and is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM. A single ticket costs 6€ (as of November 2023).
Originally, two mills were attached to the Stargarder Gate, one of which, the Lohmühle, still exists today. A stroll within the city's wall ring takes you past numerous historic buildings to the Fürstenkeller on Stargarder Straße. This former ducal guesthouse has been a cozy inn since the mid-18th century, which was also the favorite haunt of Fritz Reuter. The Fritz Reuter Monument, honoring the writer, is located in the ramparts near the train station. The Neubrandenburg Playhouse is the oldest preserved theater building in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, housed in a half-timbered building from 1794. From the "modern" part of the downtown area, the residential buildings built during the GDR era in socialist classicism are of interest.
The Four-Gate Festival City
Every year on the last weekend in August, Neubrandenburg transforms into a festival city: the Four-Gate Festival takes place throughout the city area. Numerous individual events, exhibitions, markets, and culinary offerings attract visitors from all over Germany to Neubrandenburg. But the event year in Neubrandenburg has even more to offer, no matter what time of year you rent your vacation apartment or house.
In the Culture Park between Friedrich-Engels-Ring and the northern shore of Lake Tollensesee, the Easter Festival, Pentecost Festival, and Oktoberfest take place. In the weeks before Christmas, the Weberglockenmarkt draws people to Neubrandenburg's old town. Legend has it that a weaver once found his way home through a dense snowstorm on Christmas night by the ringing of the Marienkirche bells. Today, the snowstorms are not as dense, and instead of bell ringing, mulled wine stands, crafts, and plenty of culinary delights lure people to Neubrandenburg. The evenings can be spent in a cozy vacation apartment in a prime location near the center.
Vacation for the Whole Family
The Mecklenburg Lake District is particularly suitable for a vacation with children and pets. Rent family-friendly vacation apartments and private holiday homes in quiet locations and enjoy the diverse excursion possibilities of the region. The area is especially popular for hiking and water sports.
Families with pets can rent affordable accommodations with large gardens for a relaxed vacation with children and dogs. Near downtown Neubrandenburg, there is a water ski cableway to enjoy the popular sport in summer without a boat. The Feldberg Lake District and the Müritz National Park offer entertainment on dry land with miles of biking and hiking trails between forests, lakes, and vast landscapes. In winter, the MüritzTherme in Röbel offers daily swimming fun and a sauna landscape from 9 AM to 9 PM (as of November 2023). You can find the admission prices for different areas and durations on the website.
Tüften, Tüffel un Plum
The cuisine of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is known for being hearty and rich, originating from the simple rural cooking of Northeast Germany. The staple ingredients are pork and beef, as well as game. The most popular side dish is the potato, also called Tüfte. In Tribsees in Western Pomerania, there is a potato museum. Potatoes are also served with fish. The many lakes in the region provide a wide selection of freshwater fish such as eel, pike, trout, pike-perch, and carp. Accommodations directly on the water offer the opportunity to fish yourself. Try the smoked fish specialties from the many small smokehouses around the Mecklenburg Lake District.
A local specialty of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the combination of savory and sweet. Tüffel un Plum is a potato soup with plums and bacon. The combination of pears with beans and bacon is also popular. Enjoy a Swedish cup for dessert in the summer at lakeside garden restaurants, made according to an old recipe. This popular ice cream sundae consists of vanilla ice cream, applesauce, eggnog, and whipped cream. If you enjoy cooking in your own vacation home or apartment, you'll find plenty of fresh ingredients at the numerous farm shops in the region. Every Tuesday and Thursday, the weekly market on the central marketplace offers a wide selection of local products.
Neubrandenburg for Art Lovers
The city's art highlight is the Neubrandenburg Art Collection. The collection's history began in the 1980s, decades after the original collection disappeared at the end of World War II. The gallery displays paintings and sculptures from the mid-last century to the present, featuring works by Daniel Spoerri, Robert Metzkes, and Matthias Jaeger, among others. Every two years, the city's art prize is awarded to artists who live and work in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The art collection shares the same opening hours as the museum, and a single ticket here costs 5€ (as of November 2023).
The Concert Church Neubrandenburg opened in 2001 after long-term restoration work on the Marienkirche, damaged since World War II, and has become a top-tier concert hall. The church is a recurring motif in the paintings of the romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich. An unfinished painting from 1830 depicts the church with its original tower design with a flat roof, which the citizens of Neubrandenburg protested against.
