Travel guide Maloja
Traveling to Maloja with the red narrow-gauge railway
Experience a wonderful
holiday in the mountains of Graubünden and rent a privately owned holiday home or apartment in Maloja, a village near the Maloja Pass. Politically, the village belongs to the Maloja region of the same name, and geographically to the Upper Engadine. Guests arrive via Zurich International Airport. From the Swiss capital, there are SBB connections to Landquart. Then, take the red narrow-gauge railway to
St. Moritz. From there, take the EngadinBus to Maloja. The accommodation can also be reached by car, for example via highway 13 through Chur to Reichenau. Drive through Thusis over the Julier Pass to Silvaplana and along the main road 3 to Maloja. Book a comfortable accommodation or a stylishly furnished apartment with a kitchen, internet, balcony, and at an affordable price in the holiday resort according to your personal wishes and enjoy a relaxing journey. Experience the Engadine up close.
Natural spectacle and plenty of sunshine
The Maloja region in
Switzerland is known for its many sunny days. Due to the altitude, it can get very cold at times. In winter, despite low temperatures, it is pleasant because of the sunshine and dry air. A phenomenon on autumn mornings in Maloja is the so-called fog snake. During this natural spectacle, the condensation level is very low. At Maloja's altitude, rising moist air is transformed into fog or clouds. Above the snake, unobstructed sunshine is possible. The fog snake does not lie still in the valley but moves westward over the Maloja Pass.
Rich in local classics
When renting a holiday home or a privately owned apartment in Maloja, you have the opportunity to get to know and taste the various specialties of
Graubünden. A classic of the canton is the Grisons meat. Pieces of beef are slightly pickled and dried in the fresh air for up to half a year. The meat loses half its weight, resulting in a spicy ham with a very special note. We also recommend the Grisons barley soup with rolled barley, celeriac, potatoes, and other root vegetables. Grisons meat, bacon, sausage, or ham are finally added. Typical for the Maloja region and Graubünden is the mountain cheese produced on the alpine pastures in summer. Other delicacies of the area are the chard wraps Capuns, the potato ribs Maluns, and the spaetzle-like Pizokel. During a holiday with a holiday home or apartment, you will also find that wine plays a big role, such as the Pinot Noir. A popular digestive liqueur is the Röteli with a spice mix of cloves, cinnamon, and vanilla.
Maloja: Enchanting lake and winter sports paradise
The idyllically situated village of Maloja is family and pet friendly. Dog owners can find information about offers for a
holiday with a dog or pet in Graubünden. For families, a visit to Lake Silvaplana is a highlight. The lake impresses with clear water and the Alps as a picturesque panorama. Around the lake, there are well-maintained walking, hiking, and cycling paths. In winter, Lake Silvaplana becomes a paradise for skaters, as the water freezes completely. Moreover, a section of the Ski Marathon crosses the ice surface of the lake. In the winter months, privately owned holiday homes and apartments in Maloja are especially popular with winter sports enthusiasts. Cross-country ski trails start in the village, and a lift takes you and your family to the nearest ski resort. Hike along the Bergell or use the numerous trails if you are an active vacationer who loves cross-country skiing. The hike from the Maloja Pass, the transition between Engadine and Bergell to Piz Lunghin (2,780 m), leads to the source of the Inn in Graubünden. This is only suitable for experienced hikers!
Surrounded by mountains, valleys, and pine forests
During a holiday with a holiday home or apartment, you can also indulge in art. Visit the Segantini House, the birthplace of the famous painter Giovanni Segantini. Here, you can embark on an exciting journey of discovery. A hiking trail dedicated to him is lined with his artworks and leads to the Ordens Valley. Numerous other sights in Maloja date back to the founding period. These include the Church of Chiesa bianca, which opened its doors as the first Anglican church in 1885. Today, the building is used for cultural events. The Maloja Reformed Church, the Maloja Palace Hotel, and Villa La Motta are also worth seeing. The Belvedere Tower, part of the castle of the Belgian Count Camille de Renesse, is located on a rock spur above the mountain village. Due to financial problems, the construction project remained unfinished. Giovanni Segantini wanted to turn it into a medieval palace, but he died earlier from appendicitis. Today, the preserved 24-meter-high observation tower belongs to the nature conservation organization Pro Natura. The nature reserve with its pine forest and glacier mills is worth exploring. During your holiday with comfortable accommodation, you can also take trips to other places in the Maloja region. We recommend the world-famous winter sports resort St. Moritz, the idyllic
Pontresina, or Samedan, the hub of the Rhaetian Railway. Simply rent a stylishly furnished holiday home or a cozy apartment with a kitchen, internet, and balcony at an affordable price according to your personal wishes in the resort and spend an unforgettable journey with your loved ones. The dream of pure relaxation comes true!
