Travel guide Hvar
Mediterranean holiday weather all year round
In the southern Adriatic, the climate is Mediterranean with warm, dry summers and mild, damp winters. The average daytime temperature during the summer months is 28 °C (82 °F). The water temperature of the Adriatic Sea rises significantly above 20 °C (68 °F) and can reach 27 °C (81 °F) in enclosed bays - perfect for a
beach holiday in Hvar. In the winter months, the mercury rarely drops to single digits during the day.
Where the patron still fishes himself
Dalmatia is a paradise for fish and meat lovers. That being said, vegetarians still have a hard time in Dalmatia. On the islands, fish and seafood rank high on the menus of restaurants and traditional konobas. Try, for example, black squid risotto, octopus salad, grilled scampi, or brodet, a fish stew made from various fish cooked with white wine, olive oil, onions, garlic, and parsley. Fish is usually priced per kilo. The host will show you their catch of the day (many restaurant owners still fish themselves!) on a platter or in a display case and charge you based on weight. In Dalmatia, a lot of grilling is done - and it's done over a natural pine wood fire. You'll find lamb, steaks, pork ribs, and occasionally offal. A special preparation method is the peka, a kind of casserole with a bell-shaped lid. The preparation of lamb, octopus, or kid takes several hours - be sure to order the day before! The most popular side dish is chard cooked in olive oil with garlic, served with boiled potatoes. Good wines come from the Pelješac peninsula (the red Dingać and Postup) and the island of Korčula. Tasty, simple table wines are also produced on Hvar. Stroll through the old town after a successful meal or prepare yourself for the vibrant nightlife.
The swimming paradise on the Hell Islands
Just a stone's throw from the port of Hvar are the Hell Islands (Pakleni Otoci). The small archipelago is one of the highlights of a holiday on Hvar. Sveti Klement (Veli Otok) is the largest of the islands. There are some good konobas and a beautiful beach in the Palmizana Bay. On the island there is a chapel from the 15th century. On Jerolim, directly opposite Hvar, there is a famous nudist beach. Beach and sand haters can book a
holiday with a pool on Hvar and refresh themselves in their own holiday home. The island, which is tranquil outside the season, really comes to life on August 2nd when the patron saint, Stephen, is celebrated. The Adriatic coast is the perfect place for a beach holiday that suits your personal preferences with your family. Also, take a trip to the northern coast of Croatia, to Gromin Dolac, Sućuraj or Zavala, or Jelsa.
Walking tour through historic Hvar
Follow in the footsteps of history. Numerous testimonies of the city's millennia-old history can be reached on foot from your holiday home in Hvar. Above the harbour is the fortress Španjola, which dates back to the 13th century but was not completed until 1551. From here you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the nearby Hell Islands. Beneath your feet, you will see the old marble harbour mole dating back to 1455. From the mole, it's just a short walk to the main square from 1449, with the 13th-century cathedral dedicated to St. Stephen I. One of the city's most impressive facades is the 15th-century loggia in the Venetian Renaissance style. A special feature of the Croatian islands is the Arsenal with a theatre. The building was once a shipyard and was converted into the first theatre in the Balkans in 1612. A unique event is the cross procession, which has been held for 500 years, on the night from Holy Thursday to Good Friday. In total, six processions start in the towns of
Jelsa, Pitva, Vrisnik, Svirče, Vrbanja, and Vrboska. The procession moves clockwise between the towns, covering the entire island. Rent a holiday accommodation, such as a holiday home or apartment, for example in Milna, with a sea view and internet access at a reasonable price, according to your personal preferences in Croatia, and enjoy unforgettable excursions along the Adriatic coast.
