Are you still looking for the right holidaymakers for your holiday home or apartment?
The history of Brouwershaven dates back to the 12th century. Around a cluster of houses, a second harbor was developed on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland, which over time became an important trading port. The grandeur of past centuries is still alive in the old city harbor. From your holiday apartment or house, you can easily reach many attractions on foot or, typically Dutch, by bicycle. Right at the inner harbor is the historic marketplace. The old houses and small shops give the old town the character of ancient Hanseatic cities. On the marketplace stands the monument to Jacob Cats, one of the city's most famous sons, a statesman and poet. Cats lived in the 16th century and bequeathed his collected works to the city of Brouwershaven before his death. At that time, the old town hall was built in the elaborate style of Flemish Renaissance. The facade features a clock and a bell tower. The most outstanding attraction in Brouwershaven, however, is the Sint Nicolaaskerk, whose size reflects the city's former significance. The nave of the main ship is over 80 meters long. It was built between 1300 and 1500 and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors. In Molenstraat stands a typical windmill from the year 1723. The windmills served for centuries as engines to drain the sea bays, alluvial landscapes, and moors of the Netherlands and to control water movements. There are over 1,000 windmills throughout the country.
The Netherlands is a unique water world – both on this side and beyond the dykes. The biggest highlight around the Grevelingenmeer, the islands, and the North Sea is enjoying the landscape from the water. From the marina in Den Osse, set sail. Here, you can rent small open keelboats, dinghies, motorboats, and sloops or full-sized yachts for a day trip on the North Sea. Many holiday apartments and private holiday homes in the Netherlands have their own boat dock right in front of the house. In holiday parks, boat trips are at the top of the list of recreational activities. If you do not yet have a boating license, you can obtain one in the Netherlands during your holiday. And some boats are also available without a license. On land, a maritime event calendar provides the right atmosphere throughout the year. On "Brouwsedag," the city of Brouwershaven invites musicians from all over Zeeland for a session.
The beaches of Renesse and Ouddorp on the neighboring island of Goeree-Overflakkee are perfect for a holiday with the whole family. Many accommodations also welcome dogs and pets. Spend your holiday with a dog in Brouwershaven at the Grevelingen in comfortable holiday homes in a quiet location with large gardens. Water sports enthusiasts will find opportunities to rent a boat themselves at the marina in the neighboring community of Den Osse and discover the Grevelingenmeer from the water. Besides the many boats, there is hardly a more typical means of transport in the Netherlands than the bicycle. What could be nicer than leisurely cycling through the flat, expansive landscape, through fields and over dykes, and discovering the neighboring towns Zonnemaire or Serooskerke? Renting bicycles is simply part of a holiday in Zeeland. For those who want to "cheat" a little against the wind on the way back to the accommodation, there are bicycles with electric drive. At the same time, this increases the range by a few kilometers.
A stay in Zeeland offers the finest culinary delights from the sea. And it doesn't get fresher than this. Mussels, oysters, and lobster top the menus at restaurants in Zeeland. The mussels come from the Oosterschelde. They are briefly steamed, or cooked with a bit of white wine, onions, celery, and carrots. Even more simplistic are the oysters, especially the flat oyster, which is eaten—or slurped—raw with a bit of lemon juice and a little pepper. The wild oyster is sometimes grilled or offered fried in batter. In the fish shops, you can find oysters fresh from the farm. Enjoy them in your holiday apartment or house on the terrace or in the garden with a glass of white wine. Culinary delights are promised by the Oosterschelde lobster. Its meat is particularly tender and sweet. Other specialties include cockles, periwinkles, and crabs. By the way: In Zeeland, it is allowed to harvest or "pick" the fruits of the sea yourself, as is the case with oysters. Let the locals show you how they search the sandbanks at low tide. Cockles can be prepared like mussels and are also excellent as a base for a pasta sauce. If you do not want to do it yourself, you will find numerous restaurants and cafes near your accommodation.
Near your holiday apartment or private holiday home in Zeeland, there are numerous museums to discover. Start your cultural tour at Brouw’s Museum near your accommodation in Brouwershaven. Experience the maritime history of the harbor and the long tradition of goods traffic and fishing. The house displays ship models and paintings, sea charts, and other maritime objects. Between the years 1838 and 1870, Brouwershaven was even more important than Rotterdam, as the access to the large harbor was blocked. Continue at the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk. The museum is located in the caissons that were used in 1953 to close the breach in the dike during one of the worst flood disasters to hit Zeeland. Next on the excursion agenda is the Maritiem Museum in the Gravensteen Castle at Zierikzee. The museum, along with other small local museums in the area, offers insights into the centuries-old tradition of the region. Larger museums are located in Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Bruges. These cities are each about an hour and a half away.
