History of the Baltic Sea resort Kühlungsborn
The path to today’s Baltic Sea resort Kühlungsborn was long and eventful. And it is an old story: Around 1200, the two Hagen villages of Brunshaupten and Arendsee arose between Kühlung and the Baltic Sea. Close to the sea, the farmers, without hereditary ownership rights, wrest meager yields from the land. Only in 1862, after the introduction of hereditary leasehold and the independence of the two communities in 1869, does the number of settlers increase. Farmers, fishermen, and craftsmen acquire land at favorable prices. While Fulgen already receives its first bathers in 1850, it takes about 30 years in Brunshaupten and Arendsee before the first two guests stay overnight with hereditary blacksmith Sengebusch. Shortly afterwards, master carpenter Bünger builds the first hotel, thus laying the foundation for one of the most popular holiday destinations on the Baltic Sea.
The excellent location of the two communities on the Bay of Mecklenburg quickly becomes well known. In 1895, Brunshaupten and Arendsee were already each hosting 700 guests. Piers and bathing establishments, at that time strictly separated by gender, are constructed. After the connecting road between the two places was opened for development in 1904, the spa business boomed. Along today’s Ostseeallee, buildings and restaurants were built whose typical spa architecture remains a characteristic feature of the place to this day.
Almost half of all guests on the Mecklenburg coast relax between Kühlung and the sea.
The place is electrified and receives “speaking devices” to Hamburg and Berlin, as well as a connection to the spa railway “Molli”—a link to the world. The First World War brings guest traffic in the seaside resorts to a standstill, as does the subsequent recession. Between 1933 and 1945, the city is developed into a military base. KdF programs ("Strength through Joy") and fleet visits serve Nazi propaganda. After the merger of Brunshaupten and Arendsee, the municipality is granted town rights in 1938. The new place receives the name "Ostseebad Kühlungsborn" in reference to the green hilly landscape in the hinterland. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the former place of recreation once again loses its significance. Buildings are used as military hospitals. Towards the end of the war, Kühlungborn additionally takes in numerous refugees and later displaced persons.
After 1948, the new state takes a different direction in the development of tourism. In 1953, during "Action Rose," the particularly interesting properties are nationalized. Despite the mass tourism now organized by the holiday service, Kühlungsborn remained a popular vacation destination in the following years as well. With up to guests, the town developed into the largest Baltic Sea resort in the former GDR. However, the old romance was lost, and the architecture decayed.
In autumn 1991, the first pier in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is inaugurated. The splendor gradually returns. With swift yet careful restoration of the old architecture, the elegant charm comes to the fore again.
