Steeghuus Twixlum
Description
Our charming semi-detached house, directly on the canal with its own boat dock, was built in 1928 and today combines modern comfort with historical flair. On approximately 84 square meters, the house offers space for 3 to 4 people – ideal for couples, small families, or friends who want to enjoy a relaxing break in East Frisia. Upon entering, you are welcomed by a spacious hallway, from which you reach the modern, well-equipped kitchen – perfect for cooking and enjoying together. Adjacent to this is a large, open living/dining area: a cozy living room with a seating area (the sofa is extendable and suitable for permanent sleepers) and a wood-burning stove invites you to relax. A smart TV as well as a selection of board games and books provide entertainment on rainy days. In the dining room, which is open to the living room, there is an extendable dining table with enough chairs; a small desk with monitor also offers a practical option for working or surfing.
From the hallway, you reach the upper floor via a typically old East Frisian wooden staircase (a bit narrower and steeper than modern stairs). There you will find two bedrooms as well as a bathroom with shower. The first bedroom has a queen-size double bed. The second bedroom is equipped with a flexible pull-out bed: the lower bed can either be used as a second single bed or placed next to the upper bed to create a spacious king-size double bed. Both bedrooms are also equipped with a smart TV.
Through another door in the hallway on the ground floor you reach the basement stairs. Here you will find, among other things, a laundry room with washing machine and dryer as well as an additional toilet/washbasin. A door from the basement leads to the garden behind the house. Right outside, there is a covered area that offers a sheltered place to sit even on rainy days. Since smoking is not allowed in the house, an ashtray is provided here; for cooler days, an infrared heater ensures pleasant warmth. From here you look out into the garden with a lawn framed by flowerbeds and bushes – not perfect, but with small, prettily planted areas.
At the back of the garden, the view opens up to the water. At your own jetty, you can sit in a beach chair, enjoy the peace and watch the sunset over the wide fields – a real highlight of the house. The direct access to the water is ideal for anglers (fishing license required) or guests who bring a small boat or SUP. Arrival by boat is generally possible; however, the last bridges before Twixlum have a limited clearance height. Within sight of the jetty, there is also a public slipway where boats can be conveniently launched.
Two well-maintained bicycles are available for excursions around Emden. Ideal for short trips to the harbor, into the city, or along the canals.
Arrive, take a deep breath, and feel at home – we look forward to your visit at Steghaus Twixlum.

Location and surroundings of object
Wide landscapes invite you to take long walks or relaxed bike tours along the canals and fields. Those who prefer a view of the water can explore the East Frisian coast on well-developed cycle paths along the sea dike. The tranquility, the fresh sea air, and the open expanse promise pure relaxation and a soothing break from everyday life. There are numerous worthwhile excursion destinations in the surrounding area: from the picturesque fishing village of Greetsiel with its historic harbor and famous twin windmills, to Norddeich with its sandy beach and seal station, all the way to day trips to the East Frisian Islands. You can easily reach Borkum directly from Emden – the ferry terminal is only about 6 km from Steghaus Twixlum. Norderney and Juist depart from Norddeich.
The city of Emden also has a lot to offer. Art enthusiasts visit the renowned art gallery with modern and contemporary art, while the Otto Huus offers charming and humorous insights into the work of Otto Waalkes. Around the Ratsdelft, the historic harbor of the city, maritime life can be experienced especially well – from cozy walking paths to small restaurants right by the water. A special highlight are the canal cruises, which take you through the historic waterways and canals that run like a network throughout the entire city. These tours show Emden at its most beautiful – tranquil, maritime, and full of charm. The harbor tours, which start directly at the Ratsdelft and offer fascinating insights into the seaport, the shipyards, and the maritime life of the city, are equally popular. If you prefer to be active yourself, you can also rent rowboats or pedal boats in Emden to explore the canals on your own – a wonderful way to experience the city from a completely different perspective. For extended canal tours, small motorboats are also available. Up to 5 HP may be driven without a license throughout the entire Emden area. The historic ramparts invite you to a relaxing walk, and the bunker museum offers fascinating insights into the city's history during the Second World War. In addition, Emden offers a diverse culinary scene – from regional cuisine and fish restaurants to international options.
The city center invites you to stroll with small boutiques, cafés, and maritime flair. In the evening, numerous pubs and bars provide a lively yet relaxed atmosphere to round off the day. Well-known seasonal festivals such as the Matjes Festival or the Delft Festival bring additional life to the city and offer a wonderful opportunity to experience East Frisian culture up close.

We – a Cologne girl with French roots and a boy from Emden – have furnished this house the way we ourselves would feel comfortable as guests. "A little bit of Cologne heart," a touch of French "laisser-faire," and a bit of East Frisian "Take it slow, it'll be fine" – and the aim that you will want for nothing.
